Wood's tiebreaker leads Bombers to win
The rivalry that exists between Northern Lehigh and Palmerton in any sport never gets old.
It was very evident on Wednesday night when the Lady Bombers and Bulldogs matched up in a Colonial League soccer game. The Bulldogs, with just three wins on the season, didn't look anything like a team with that record. The Bombers, celebrating Senior Night and needing a win to basically pick up a District 11 berth, seemed a bit tight. When the dust cleared, however, it was Palmerton who scored the tiebreaker with 21 seconds remaining on Monica Wood's fourth goal of the night by a 4-3 score."It was a crazy game," said Palmerton head coach Nate Petrosky."To go back and forth and to pull off the 'W' was huge."In a lot of things, we have a rivalry with them and they've come a long way. In the first game of the season, we beat them by four or five goals. They're banged up, we're banged up, but they've come a long way."It's one of those games that could give you a heart attack because it could have gone either way. They had some great opportunities there near the end of the game and they could have taken the lead. We had some and managed to pull it off and take care of it. But they were tremendous."Wood, Palmerton's all-time leading goal scorer, didn't waste any time putting her team up 1-0 with a goal in the first two minutes of the game. After missing a penalty kick, Northern Lehigh eventually tied it when Franki Dibilio found the back of the net.The lead went back to the Bombers on Wood's second goal, but the Bulldogs didn't stop being aggressive.Jill Olewine's shot from the right side made it into the crease to tie it at 2-2.Wood made it 3-2 in favor of the hosts, only to have Cailie Niebell score the Bulldogs third and final goal."A lot of eyes are on Monica," said Petrosky. "You have to look at what Kaylie Haskins has done as our keeper. Coming in, she didn't play much in the net for us last year. She came in and stepped up huge. Brianna Doherty, another senior, has given up the goal scoring to play defense for us. Kendra Pekurny, she's a softball star and comes out here her senior year and busts her butt for us. There's a lot that has gone into this team."Jenna Lynn and Linnaea Leister both assisted on two of Wood's goals.Haskins had 14 saves in goal for Palmerton. Northern Lehigh goalie Meghan Handwerk had 13 saves."They played so hard," said Northern Lehigh head coach Jason Reinhard."It's tough to play the second night in a row when you are down to 16 bodies. To have it end like that was really rough."We didn't finish a couple of chances that we had. Palmerton is a great team and we knew we would have to play at the top level to stay with them and we did. Our team gave everything that they had to give and then some. It's just unfortunate that the result went the other way."
