Stasko scores six TDs
It's been a rough couple of weeks for the Palmerton football team.
After running out to a 3-0 start, the Blue Bombers found themselves in the midst of a three-game losing streak.Mike Stasko and the Palmerton offense jumped on the Roughies early and the end result was a 54-21 win that saw the entire second half played under the "Mercy Rule".Stasko scored six touchdowns on the night (five rushing and one receiving) and almost single handedly send the Roughies to their fifth loss in seven games.His vision and cutting ability to get out of trouble was evident.Stasko's first score came with 8:26 left in the first quarter where he carried the ball four of six plays and ended it on a nine-yard run.The Bombers' defense set up Stasko's second TD as it turned the Roughies back on a fourth down play at the Catty 25. After a perfect completion from Garrett Perschy to Luke Yaindl down to the five, Stasko tucked it under his arm and ran in from five yards out.The most impressive drive of the night came when Perschy orchestrated a 10 play, 65-yard march with Stasko rushing in on a 14-yard run. in the second quarter.A blocked punt set up Stasko's fourth TD on a two-yard run and before the half, Perschy found Stasko wide open for a 57-yard TD strike, making it 35-0 at halftime.On the second play of the third quarter, Stasko raced 54 yards for his final score of the night.With over four minutes remaining in the third quarter, Rae Washington took his turn and scored on a seven-yard run.That gave the Bombers a 47-0 lead and the rest was history."The kids s earned this one," said Palmerton head coach Chris Walkowiak. "Tuesday going into Wednesday, we fixed things a little bit. We know we still have to execute, but overall we made plays."I liked their mentality tonight and execution-wise I thought we were pretty sharp into the third quarter."Walkowiak was a little frustrated having two touchdowns called back but called them "teaching points" for his club."We have three big games at the end of the season, but we're going to just focus on Northwestern right now and go from there," Walkowiak said.SUPER SANDER ... Palmerton's Toby Sander had a big defensive night, blocking a punt to give the Blue Bombers the ball at the Catasauqua 17. The drive ended when Stasko scored his fourth TD of the night. Sander also intercepted a pass and returned it to the Catasauqua 26.PLAYING TIME ... The Blue Bombers put the JV offense on the field with just over three minutes left in the third quarter and sophomore Brody Boehler showed some spark at quarterback rushing for 44 yards on five carries. The JV defense got to see some action, but the starters were put back in when the Roughies kept their starters in and ran off three straight scores.BACK OVER . 500 ... Palmerton upped its record to 4-3 with three games remaining on the road at Northwestern Lehigh and Salisbury and at home against rival Northern Lehigh. All three opponents will be tough foes with all of them looking at possible post-season playoffs.
