Whitehall surges past Pleasant Valley

WHITEHALL - Pleasant Valley and Whitehall are no strangers on the soccer field this season, having faced each other twice before their quarterfinal match-up in the District 11 Class AAA playoffs Thursday night.

With the two foes splitting their first two outcomes, their seasons' fates rested on the outcome of the third and final 'rubber match,' at Whitehall High School Sporting Complex. After a scoreless first half, the Lady Zephyrs' Ivanna Jones dropped in two scores to lead the defending district champions to a 2-0 win."I thought we played really well tonight," Whitehall head coach David Weitzman said afterward. "I thought our back four did an excellent job and their shape was great. We won the central/midfield battle tonight, as well. Ivanna was a beast up top tonight, as well. She's really strong and she works hard all the time."With the win, Whitehall (14-4-1) moves on to play against Nazareth, which defeated Liberty, 4-3 on Thursday night. In the first half, both sides had opportunities to score, but just missed, as their shots were either stopped or just missed the goal."I thought in the first half, we defended well," Pleasant Valley head coach Derek Strohl admitted. "They had a lot of chances in the first half to score and we really got lucky. They just did a better job in the second half of finding the spaces in the middle and they finally got on the end of them as they crossed the passes."An errant pass ended up perfectly setting up a streaking Jones to the Bears' net, which she managed to belt past PV's Mikaela Miller for the first score.A minute later, a battle in the right corner of the field closest to the Bears' goal was eventually won by Kassidy Cunningham, who sent it perfectly across the front of the Bears' goal. This time, Jones flew down the middle of the defense to pound it in for the insurance tally."It stinks that it's the end of the season," Strohl said. "But the girls have a lot to be proud of. With nine seniors on the team, we will be losing a lot of talent and leadership."ADVANTAGE, ZEPHYRS ... Despite the final score of the game only being 2-0, Whitehall held a distinctive advantage in shots on goal, as they had a 21-4 edge.HEAD-TO-HEAD ... Earlier in the season, Whitehall notched a 3-0 regular season win over the Bears at Pleasant Valley. Their second meeting was in the semifinals of last week's EPC championships, where the Lady Bears evened up the series with a 1-0 win.DYNAMIC DUO ... All throughout the season, the Lady Bears used the tandem of Renee Milos and Mikaela Miller as their goalkeepers. Typically, Milos would be in goal for the first half, followed by Miller taking the reins in the second. In last night's game, they combined for 15 saves.
