Bombers breeze

Midway through the 2015 regular season, all eyes were focused on the Northern Lehigh-Palmerton game as one that could very well have post-season implications.

Instead, the "Battle of the Blue Mountain" turned out to be one for bragging rights between the two schools. The Bombers jumped out to an early lead and went on to beat the Bulldogs 41-14 to end the season at .500 with a 5-5 record. The Bulldogs, on the other hand, finished at 4-6."We missed a couple of opportunities to grab a couple of wins, but the kids bounced back and this week we were focused on Northern Lehigh and sending our seniors out with a win," said Palmerton head coach Chris Walkowiak. "With Garrett Perschy throwing for over 1,000 yards again and Mike Stasko setting a single season record for touchdowns only juniors, we're happy to have them both back next year."Give credit to the offense. Coach (Mike) Falcone had a good game plan, the offensive line did a good job. Defensively, they had a couple of big plays on us, otherwise we played a good game."The Bombers wound up finding the end zone for the first three scores of the night. An interception by Stasko set up the first score as he ended a 12-play drive on a 10-yard run with 1:03 left in the first quarter.Perschy scored the second Bomber TD on a keeper from 12 yards out with 9:33 in the half and Stasko slipped in from two yards out with 2:43 left until intermission to make it 21-0.Northern Lehigh put together a 71-yard drive that ended with quarterback Chad Cederberg connecting with Brandon Smith for a 15-yard score with 40 seconds remaining."I think what hurt early was they got out to that early lead," said Northern Lehigh head coach Joe Tout. "We were having success running the ball so they bent on a play action pass and we should have scored on that, but we didn't."That turned the game and the emotion around. Our kids came back and made it interesting for awhile. We were up against it a little bit at the end of the season, but this senior class was a good group. There was never the attitude that we were done. They were faster than we were and they figured out there that we were missing a couple of corners.'Perschy found Jared Mooney open for a 34-yard touchdown on the opening drive of the second half. The Bulldogs answered when Tekoah Guedes connected with Ashton Bevans for a 51-yard touchdown on a flea-flicker.The Bombers added scores on a 18-yard run by Rae Washington and a 21-yard pass from Perschy to Luke Yaindl.Palmerton also had a touchdown called back and had a completed pass down to the Northern Lehigh one erased by another penalty.RECORD SETTER ... Palmerton Mike Stasko scored two touchdowns in the game to give him 21, good for a Palmerton single season record. The previous mark was held by Chris Siracuse who scored 20 back in 1999.HITTING 1,000 YARDS AGAIN ... Palmerton's Garrett Perschy finished the night with 140 yard passing to top the 1,000 yard mark for the second year in a row. Perschy finished the season with 1,080 yards through the air.SEASON FINALE ... Both the Blue Bombers and Bulldogs saw their seasons come to an end as neither qualified for the post-season playoffs after both did a year ago. Palisades wound up edging both the Bombers and Bulldogs for the Eastern Conference berth. A Saucon Valley win over Palisades and the Bulldogs loss to Palmerton ended their District 11 hopes.
