PSU offense not playing up to talent level
It's a new week and another new opponent for the Nittany Lions as the Michigan Wolverines will invade Happy Valley later today (Noon ET, ABC).
The bye week has helped Penn State (7-3) faithful forget about the crushing 23-21 loss to Northwestern two weeks ago, but when you think about what could've been it still makes fans of the Nittany Lions cringe.Imagine an 8-2 Penn State team against an 8-2 Michigan team this week at Beaver Stadium with an entire stadium participating in a "white out." Also, throw in the fact that Penn State would only have one division loss going into its game with the Wolverines, putting even more on the line. But that's not how it panned out. The Penn State offense looked vanilla once again and when I say that I don't mean that the talent on the field is vanilla. However, the play calling is and even though it seems like I'm the last man to jump on the ship, I'm all aboard and at the point now where I think a change needs to be made at the offensive coordinator position.Penn State head coach James Franklin most likely won't make a change there until the end of the season unless the offense puts on another lackluster performance this week against Michigan. If Franklin continues to roll with coordinator John Donovan and Penn State continues to lose the games with teams that have similar talent then his job could be in jeopardy as well.I look at the Penn State offensive roster and I see a lot of talent. I see talent that just doesn't seem to be used the right way. The Nittany Lions obviously have a heralded quarterback with experience in Christian Hackenberg, an explosive running back in Saquon Barkley, a very talented and big wide receiving unit and last, but not least an experienced group of tight ends.Granted the offensive line isn't the best in the BIG 10, but they're certainly improved. Donovan knew coming into the season that the offensive line wasn't going to be great. Honestly, I think they've played better than most people thought they were going to play. My point is there are things that can be done to put your players in the best position to succeed even if the offensive line is average. Tons of other teams are able to do that across the country year in and year out and some don't have a quarterback like Christian Hackenberg running the show. With the talent that Donovan has at his disposal, the Penn State offense should be better. Yes, of course execution is key and the players have not done that at times this season, but I think most people who know football and watch Penn State can agree that there's just no consistency in the play calling department on offense. The Penn State offense ranks 88th in the country in passing yards, 99th in rushing yards, and 92nd in scoring. That is just plain inexcusable for an offense that has the potential to be a top offense in the BIG 10.Well enough of that, it's time to breakdown the Michigan game, which is a game that is very important to the Penn State program now and for the future. The Nittany Lions don't have many signature wins since James Franklin has taken over the reins, but a "W" over the Wolverines could give them just that.Penn State's rush defense didn't play well against the Wildcats two weeks ago. They surrendered 227 yards rushing to Northwestern, which by far is one of its highest totals they've given up this season. I'm going to chalk that up to fatigue, because throughout the season the Nittany Lions defense has been on the field a lot. Coming off a bye week I think the PSU "D" will be refreshed and it will play just fine, especially in a supportive "white out" atmosphere.Something to keep an eye with the Michigan offense this week is the duo of quarterback Jake Rudock and wide receiver Jehu Chesson. Rudock and Chesson hooked up for four touchdowns against Indiana a week ago in the Wolverines double overtime victory. Rudock finished with 440 yards and six touchdowns, while Chesson hauled in a career high 10 catches for 207 yards. The Michigan passing attack has been getting better every week and if Penn State doesn't get pressure on Rudock it could be a long day for fans of the Nittany Lions.Offensively, Penn State just needs to execute in the run game and if the opportunity is given it must make big plays in the passing game. It will be a challenge there's no doubt about that with Michigan giving up just 269 yards of total offense to opposing teams this season, but Indiana was able to move the ball pretty well last week, which gives the Nittany Lions hope.I'm still a firm believer that this is a dangerous offense when clicking on all cylinders and there's no better time than now to make sure all the pistons are firing.Las Vegas has Michigan as a 3.5 point favorite. I like the Wolverines to cover.I think the Nittany Lions have a real good chance to win this game, but every time they've faced a team with the same type of talent they came up short. I think the same will happen again this week.Michigan has a good defense and it can run the ball and its passing game is coming around as well. The Nittany Lions just haven't been consistent enough on offense to make me believe that they can come away with a win.My prediction is Michigan 27, Penn State 21.
