Trip to Michigan State doesn't bode well for PSU
There have been many chances for this year's Penn State Nittany Lions football team to obtain a signature win.
First there was Temple. Penn State fans know how that one went. The Nittany Lions gave up 10 sacks to the 25th ranked Owls and lost on the road 23-10.Then there was Ohio State. At 5-1, Penn State had its chance to make its mark on the 2015 college football season. The then No. 1 Buckeyes rushed for 315 yards on the Nittany Lions defense, coming away with a 38-10 convincing home victory.Next up was the 21st ranked Northwestern Wildcats. I think most sports analysts would agree this game was a must win for Penn State. The defense once again played poorly against the rush, giving up over 200 yards on the day. The Nittany Lions offensive game plan was as vanilla as a small cone at Annie's Ice Cream in Jim Thorpe and they once again lost 23-21.Then of course there was the latest debacle at Beaver Stadium against the 12th ranked Michigan Wolverines. This one had to be hard to swallow for anyone who supports the blue and white. Multiple offensive opportunities inside the 10-yard line and all that came about was field goals. Everything looked rushed, there was no creativity, and quite frankly offensive coordinator John Donovan's word of the day on his word calendar must've been "predictable."The wasted offensive opportunities resulted in a 28-16 loss to the Wolverines. The fourth straight loss on the season against a team that had the same type of talent level as the Nittany Lions.I read an article this week by Ben Jones a sports writer for statecollege.com. Jones starts off his article by explaining that he is just a sports writer and that he is sure John Donovan knows more about football than he does because it's Donovan's job to know. Still, he mentioned that it's time for a change and not just him, but everyone can see it. His main point was that James Franklin needs to fire John Donovan.I couldn't agree more with Jones. I know John Donovan knows more about football than I do. It's his life and he wouldn't be where he is today without being successful before he got the Penn State offensive coordinator job.But ... I don't need to know more about football than John Donovan to know that the Penn State offense has underachieved in every facet this season. Just look at the numbers. The Nittany Lions had just 207 yards of total offense last week against the Wolverines. They also rank toward the bottom of all of the FBS schools in most offensive statistical categories. It's well known in sports that coaches get the credit when things are going great, but they must also take responsibility when things are going bad. It's time for Franklin and Donovan to take responsibility for this season's offensive disaster. A change is needed and it's needed now. There's too much talent out there for the Nittany Lions not to be somewhat successful on offense. To me, it just feels like they're spinning their wheels. What happens when you keep spinning your wheels? You get a new set of tires. It's time to give someone else a chance in Happy Valley. This week, it doesn't get any easier for Penn State as they head to East Lansing to face the Michigan State Spartans.Sparty is coming off a huge win over Ohio State last week and if they defeat the Nittany Lions later today (ESPN, 3:30 ET) they will win the BIG 10 East Division and advance to the BIG 10 Championship. The Michigan State defense held Ohio State to 134 yards of total offense a week ago. That certainly doesn't bode well for the Nittany Lions. The question is, will Penn State roll out the same old product this week or will the coaching staff let it all hang out? I say, turn the ball over to Christian Hackenberg this week. Call the kind-of game that lets him roll out of the pocket and throw the ball downfield. There's no doubt the Spartans will be keying on freshman running back Saquon Barkley because of his ability to break the big run. Sparty did a great job against the Ohio State rushing attack last week and they'll probably keep PSU in check this week as well. So, it's pretty obvious the Nittany Lions will need to make game-changing type plays in the passing game to have a chance in this one.Offensively, Michigan State used the platoon approach at quarterback against the Buckeyes with heralded senior quarterback Connor Cook out with a shoulder injury. Cook is questionable this week and if he doesn't play I think that will have a big impact on the game. What Penn State does have going for it is a great bunch of defensive lineman who can rush the passer. If Cook doesn't play you're looking at backup quarterback Tyler O'Connor and Damion Terry. O'Connor is your prototypical quarterback that can hurt you with his arm, while Terry is more of a runner that is better in the zone read scheme.Either way I think the PSU rush attack can fluster the inexperienced quarterbacks of Michigan State and that's when the game could get interesting. The Penn State rush defense was pretty good last week and they'll have to be again against the Spartans as they rushed for just over 200 yards against the Buckeyes. This one once again comes down to how Penn State performs on offense. When and if the Nittany Lions make a big play that puts them in a scoring opportunity they must covert. If they waste opportunities like they did a week ago there's no doubt the Spartans will come out on top.Las Vegas has the Spartans as a 10-point favorite. I like the Spartans to cover. My reason is the same reason I gave last week. The Penn State offense is just too inconsistent and until I see a change in the play calling department then I don't think anything will change. My prediction is Michigan State 24, Penn State 13.
