Lady Indians pull away from Bulldogs

In the waning minutes of the third quarter, Lehighton head coach Eric Gidney saw something he didn't like and quickly called a timeout.

He quickly inserted five new girls looking for a combination that would halt a run by Northern Lehigh. The Bulldogs were able to cut a 14-point Lady Indians lead to eight, but that was as close as they got.Lehighton claimed a 51-35 victory and will face Jim Thorpe in the Lady Indians Holiday Tournament tonight. The Lady Bulldogs will take on Colonial League rival Palmerton in the consolation at 6.Two weeks ago, Jim Thorpe and Lehighton met and the Olympians won by three."We were looking to do some different things tonight," said Gidney afterward. "Hats off to them they're scrappy. (Kaitlin) Hoffman and (Jill) Olewine are two very tough and resilient players."We were just missing something tonight. We came out flat. So it wasn't an X's and O's thing, I just needed to find the right personnel. Hats off to the reserves I put in. I don't even exactly remember who all of those players were, but those five went in and did a fine job and kind of helped get us back into it. They set a tone that our starters needed to see."Drastic situations sometimes take drastic measures and those five don't always get their names called, but when they did tonight, I think they did a fine job. Hats off to them because I really think they're part of the reason we were able to pull out this game."Skylynn Faust scored 10 of her team-high 14 points in the first half and Aubrey Blasiak backed her with seven in the first two quarters (13 in the game) as the Lady Indians widened a six-point first quarter lead to 12 (29-17) at intermission.Olewine had six and Hoffman for to keep the Lady Bulldogs in the game, trailing 37-27 with eight minutes to play.Olewine added six in the final stanza."We definitely did some nice things, but we're still young," said Northern Lehigh head coach Tony Thomas, who doesn't have a senior on his roster. "We're battling and we're going to go through some moments that are tough to survive. Our kids are coming to play every night, they're not quitting and unfortunately we're coming out on the short end of the wins."It's not lack of effort on our end, I think it's just lack of knowledge of what to do in game situational things."We wanted to chip away at it in the second half and sometimes we got some opportunities, but couldn't put the ball in the basket."SLOW STARTING FINAL QUARTER ...
