Timely 3s propel Marian

Marian had a three-point frenzy in the first quarter of a critical Schuylkill League contest with Lourdes.

John Woitko buried a trio of treys in the first quarter to get his Colts off on the right foot. Ethan Kuczynski added another one, which accounted for all of the 12 points in the first frame for the home team.Marian's timely shooting was just enough to fend off the Red Raiders in a game that came down to the wire, 42-38."He's got a lot of confidence now and we're riding him," said Marian head coach John Patton of Woitko. "He's going to put us on his back from the three-point line. He really got us out early. All of our guys have bought in."We have guys who are hurt, and guys who are sick. When you get to this time of the year, you're playing three games in four days and it gets tough. But, everyone did what we asked them to do."The talented Lourdes team made a late charge and took its only lead of the second half during a sequence in the fourth quarter when it converted three consecutive and-one buckets."They (Lourdes) really extended and their pressure hurt us," the Colts' coach said. "They got a couple steals, closed the gap - but we were able to hold them off."The Lourdes' advantage in the final period lasted just twenty seconds. DJ Mummey came off the bench and sank the biggest three-pointer of the game for Marian. With 1:31 remaining, his only basket of the contest put the Colts back in the driver's seat."I've been playing a lot in the JV games," said Mummey, who drained 16 points in last night's prelim. "It's (shooting) always been one of the stronger points of my game."Getting some shots off in JV games seems to have helped a lot. Coming off the bench, I felt like it was my responsibility to do something. We're really deep, but I feel like that can help us out a lot coming down to the end of the season."Patton was anxious to see how his squad would respond after a four-overtime defeat to Lincoln Leadership on Saturday. The Colts have played a dozen quarters of basketball in 48 hours - perhaps the depth Mummey spoke of is already paying dividends."It's big, especially with Shenandoah coming up and who knows what's going to happen with the snow this weekend," said Patton. "This is a huge positive for us. It was a big one for us in the league, district, and all round."CONTRADICTING STYLES… The Red Raiders like to run and gun, and Marian likes its half court offense. Despite the Colts out-rebounding Lourdes by a 33-17 margin, the Raiders attempted 14 more shots.LOCKDOWN DEFENDER… Patton said, "Anthony Collevechio is the ultimate team player. He knows his role and comes in and does exactly what we ask him to do. We put him on their best offensive player and he makes them work. We can go seven, eight, or nine deep and a guy like Anthony really gives us a lot of options."LIVING AT THE LINE… Marian attempted 12 of its 17 foul shots in the final period."In the Haven game last week, we were nine for 11 from the line," said Patton. "The foul shooting has really helped us put these types of games away."LOURDESReichard 4-2-3-11, Schultz 4-2-5-10, Bucanelli 2-1-2-5, Klembara 3-0-1-6, Fobia 1-0-0-3.
