Lehigh Valley has struggled at home this season
When a team plays at home, they're supposed to have a big advantage.
Not quite so for the Lehigh Valley Phantoms, who have played much tougher on the road than they have in front of their friendly fans at the PPL Center this season. With a 6-5 shootout win in Hershey on Monday night, the Phantoms moved to 12-8-1-1 on the road this season, a much better mark than their home record of 7-13-1-0. The road record is helped along by the fact that the Phantoms are now 3-1 this season in Hershey.Lehigh Valley's road win total is now third in the Eastern Conference. The win also moved them to 4-1 in games decided by shootouts.Cole Bardreau led the way for Lehigh Valley, scoring twice in regulation, for the first multi-goal game of his career. Colin McDonald and Davis Drewiske each picked up three assists, tying a season-high for the franchise.Bardreau has shown solid improvement since joining the Phantoms late last season on a professional tryout contract. The 22-year old has four goals and seven assists in 21 games. While the offense picked up the pace, Anthony Stolarz had one of those nights in goal that was nowhere near the performance that he's used to, but was still good enough to get the win. In regulation, Stolarz made 26 saves and also stopped two of the three shots that he faced in the shootout to lock up the win.Stolarz, who will play in his first All-Star Game on Monday, credits working with Flyers goalie development coach Brady Robinson, who changed his hand positioning slightly during the preseason. While the change wasn't a big one, the results have been huge for Stolarz."Last year, I was pretty scrambly and wasn't in position to make saves," said Stolarz of the change. "We worked a lot on angle maintenance and just being square to the puck, making sure you're not square to the guy's body, but your chest is right over the center of the puck."Stolarz is 13-10-3 on the season, with a 2.40 goals against average. In shootouts, he's 2-1 this season, all numbers which helped him earn a spot on the Eastern Conference All-Star Team in just his second professional season."It's a great feeling. It gives me a boost of confidence to be recognized by other coaches, and to be selected for that is an honor," said Stolarz.PHANTOM FACTS ...
