Lady Bears near perfect

It's almost February and every high school basketball coach wants their team to play its best basketball right now.

And Pleasant Valley couldn't have picked a better time to play its most complete game of the year.If Tuesday's Eastern Pennsylvania Conference clash with East Stroudsburg South was any indication of how the Lady Bears might play over the next few weeks, they'll surely be competitive until the final buzzer. In what was a dominant defensive performance, as PV and its 1-3-1 zone convincingly defeated the Cavaliers at home on senior night, 42-5."The girls did a nice job on their senior night. I think they worked a little bit harder than they normally do," said Pleasant Valley head coach Nadia Gauronsky."A lot of the girls got in and I think the younger ones did a very nice job. It was good to get them in and get the experience of a varsity game."Renee Milos did just about everything any coach could ask for during the victory. The veteran anchored the defense, limited second-chance opportunities on the glass, set countless hard screens off the ball, and scored with ease. PV's vocal-leader tallied 14 points and 10 rebounds in the lopsided affair."She's done a really nice job; she had a bunch of big baskets tonight," said the PV coach of Milos. "Her rebounding, though, was great. She got a lot of loose balls and she just made things chaotic defensively. When their girls drive into the zone, they're not aware of how big she really is. As a senior, you would hope that there are some leaders out there and she's definitely one of them. She's been a starter for two years and has done a really nice job."South turned the ball over 21 times and could never seemingly crack the Lady Bears' disciplined defensive effort. The Cavs' scored just a single point in the first 24 minutes. Taylor Gramberg scored both of the visitor's buckets in the final quarter."We're really athletic and decent at getting up and down the floor," explained Gauronsky. "We have a lot of fastbreak opportunities and we rebound the ball pretty well. Hopefully, we can move a little more in our offensive set. I think we kind of stand and watch a little bit too much, and rely on our guards beating people off the dribble. We need to move without the basketball."Kiki Russell was another trustworthy upperclassmen that fittingly came up big on senior night with eight points.Gauronsky said, "She's been a starter for the last three years and has always done a great job. She is incredibly athletic and a court general out there. You can always rely on her to make some big plays."Pleasant Valley is playing well and have been close to knocking off some of the EPC's top competition this season. Gauronsky believes that those very occurrences could certainly pay dividends during the critical upcoming stretch of games. She said, "Early on in the season, we lost to a couple of the higher up EPC teams and we played them relatively close. I'm hoping that experience has carried over and hopefully we can get these next couple of games."LINE CHANGE … PV flexed its depth on Tuesday and shuffled its substitutes in the game by the handful on more than one occurrence. Fourteen different Lady Bears played and nine of them scored.CRUNCH TIME … Gauronsky's squad can still reach the postseason, but it won't be a walk in the park, as PV needs to win three of its next four games to qualify for the District 11 playoffs. She said, "We're fighting for our playoff lives and I think we all know that. Everyday we're working a little bit harder. Kiki Russell, Mackenzie Borger, and Renee have always done a really nice job for us. We're hoping that we can make the playoffs, but we're going to win three of the next four."NO BOARDS FOR YOU … During PV's monster first half, the Lady Bears outrebounded the Cavs' by a 25-4 margin.ES SOUTHBritton 0-0-2-0, Akinyi 0-0-0-0, Schratt 0-0-0-0, Vazquez 0-0-0-0, Camacho 0-1-2-1, Robinson 0-0-0-0, Oliver 0-0-2-0, Jackon 0-0-0-0, Caquias 0-0-0-0, Gramberg 2-0-0-4, Albert 0-0-0-0.
