Kemmerer pin gives Indians win

NAZARETH - All of the practices. All of the matches. All of the effort.

Lehighton's grind of a season came down to one final bout during the quarterfinal round of the District 11 Duals against Palisades. With the Tribe trailing by a single point, the final battle may have seemed like an eternity for many. But, it took 106-pounder Nate Kemmerer just 28 seconds to lock down Nate Barone of Palisades and propel Lehighton to a 39-34 victory."I saw how the matches were dwindling down to that point - and we got there," Kemmerer said about the possibility of his bout deciding the match. "It was great to pull out the win and better yet to get the pin. I knew I could do that. I knew what I had to do."Palisades initially came out ablaze with wins in four of the first five bouts. The Tribe had to shuffle around its lineup due to a few key injuries, which could have contributed to the rough start."I have to really give it to our guys," said Lehighton head coach Danny Williams. "Because (of injuries), we had to bump guys up in our lineup."Our guys were really tough, went out, and we did what we needed to do for the team. It was awesome."With Lehighton trailing by 13 points in the midst of the match, one of the Indians' three current 100-win wrestlers came up clutch.Tegan Durishin went toe-to-toe once again with the familiar face of Tyler Marsh of Palisades. The Indians' senior lost a heartbreaker to Marsh during the postseason one year ago. However, history would not repeat itself, as Durishin edged out Marsh, 6-3, this time in a back-and-forth decision."In the back of my mind I always had that match," said Durishin. "I knew I had to come out and get that win. It comes down to the final score, if I don't win that match, the team doesn't win. Just knowing that could have been the result made me all the more motivated to win."Cody Scherer came up with a big pin just two bouts later, and then Lehighton had a streak of three consecutive forfeit victories. Suddenly, the Indians were knocking on the door again. And finally, Nate Kemmerer kicked it down with his final-bout heroics.SAVING THE SEASON… Durishin's mid-match win was clearly the turnaround for the Tribe.Williams said, "He was looking to get that one back all year. That was actually the turning point because I thought they were going to bump away from Tegan. Not doing that and Tegan getting the win is huge. It takes every single kid to be successful. I tell them that every day."DEJA VU… Zach Kemmerer became the third member of the 2016 senior class to record his 100th win on Thursday. But, he had more goals on his mind.He said, "When Connor (Frey) and I were in fourth grade we entered a tournament in Hazelton and we won the team title. I remember our dads were saying that when we are seniors, we're going to win a district title. The fact that we're in the semifinals is pretty surreal. We now have a team (Pen Argyl) that we've beaten twice, so we just have to come out strong.Lehighton 39, Palisades 34113 - Zack Wasser (P) maj dec Logan Pagotto, 10-2120 - Zach Kemmerer (L) won by forfeit126 - Nathan Haubert (P) pinned Antonio Lorenzo in 1:00132 - Jacob Wasser (P) pinned Chris Whiteman in 5:23138 - Tyler Gretzinger (P) dec.
