Fillies dominate Salisbury

ORWIGSBURG - Savanna Kruzinsky knows what it's like to have a season end abruptly. So she made sure that didn't happen Friday night.

The Marian senior scored 19 points and pulled down 10 rebounds in a 46-28 District 11 Class AA girls quarterfinal win over Salisbury at Blue Mountain High School."I just wanted to play like it's my last game because it could have been," said Kurzinsky. "It's my senior year I just wanted to keep moving on."Kurzinsky saw her junior season end before it got started when she suffered an injury in the preseason. She's made a triumphant return to the court as she led her team in scoring during the regular season and put up a game-high in the Fillies' opening district game."It was really hard because I want to be out there," she said of last season. "It's what I love to do. I learned about the game from a different perspective and I feel like it helped me a lot. It's good to be back."Kurzinsky dominated in the paint in the first half. She scored 10 points in the first quarter and had 14 by halftime as her team opened a 27-11 lead by intermission."She did a nice job," said Marian head coach Paul Brutto. "She did her usual great job on the boards at both ends, did a nice job offensive rebounding. She's a very capable offensive player. She's got a nice shot from 12-15. She's got some athleticism so she can get to the rim. We count on here for 10-15 a game."The Fillies out-rebounded Salisbury 14-8 in the first half while also forcing 12 turnovers. The Falcons turned the ball over on four of their first five possessions while falling behind 6-0 in the first two and a half minutes.Salisbury's Lindsay Bauer, who averages 19.7 points per game, scored all 11 of her teams points in the first half and finished with 16.Kurzinsky and Brenna Karnish shared the task of guarding one of the Colonial League's top players."I thought Savanna did a real good job on Bauer once Karnish got in a little foul trouble," said Brutto. "I thought our help side could have been a little better, but overall to hold them in the 20s isn't a bad night."Salisbury struggled against Marian's pressure defense and struggled in the halfcourt game"They're a good team," said Salisbury head coach Joe Mladosich. "They have good size. They're well coached. Their two seniors (Kruzinsky and Vanessa Whitecavage) are outstanding basketball players."Whitecavage chipped in seven points and four assists while struggling to get her outside shots to fall against Salisbury. Carnish, despite missing some of the first half with early foul trouble, added 10 points. Marian stretched its lead to 37-18 after three quarters and Kurzinsky came off the floor midway through the fourth."We didn't play our best but we put the ball in the basket, came down with big rebounds and fought through it," said Kurzinsky.MOVING ON... Marian, the No. 2 seed in Class AA, will take on No. 6 Pine Grove in Tuesday's semifinals. The Cardinals beat No. 2 seed Palisades, 55-38, in a quarterfinal Friday night.GETTING BOARD...
