Olympians explode to beat Wreckers
Early on in the softball season, runs sometimes aren't easy to come by. That was certainly the case in the early innings of the Jim Thorpe and Weatherly match-up on Tuesday.
However, a nine-run explosion in the fourth and fifth inning by the Olympians propelled them to a 13-3 10-run rule victory. The first inning was a wash in this one as both pitchers in Jim Thorpe's Maggie Holloway and Weatherly's Sam Kane did a good job of keeping hitters off balance. In the second it looked as if the JT lineup started to figure out Kane a bit as they came through with three hits and three RBIs in the frame.Holloway, Brittany Marzen, and Leah Detweiler all came through with RBIs for Thorpe. It was a definite confidence boost, which certainly paid off in the later innings."I think once we settled in we got more aggressive at the plate," said Jim Thorpe coach Lori Lienhard. "We also stayed positive up there and I think that's just as important. We battled and didn't get down if we got behind in the count. That's going to be a real focus for us this season."Due to five JT errors the Wreckers were able to stay in the contest, scoring a run in the second, third, and fourth inning. The Olympians though, kept the bats going and started the late inning onslaught in the fourth, scoring four runs.Detweiler and Ciara Miranda came through with hits in the inning. Detweiler, Miranda, Holloway, and Kamieniecki all scored runs in the inning."It was just great to get off to a good start, which is something we haven't been able to do here in a while," said Brittany Marzen, who had three RBIs on the day. "Everybody contributed, and as for me, I was trying to make solid contact and be smart at the plate with my approach. We were able to string together some big innings, and that's what got us the win today."After Holloway struck out the side in the fifth, the Olympians continued to apply the pressure, tacking on five more runs to end the game.Devon Lignore and Jocyln Day also had hits for the Olympians. For Weatherly, a young team that graduated seven seniors, it's all about getting better and gaining experience every time it hits the field."We are definitely young and we made some mistakes that a young team would make today," said Weatherly coach Margaret Brown. "We're young, it's going to happen, but we hung in there today for the first few innings and the girls played hard. We just have to continue to work and get better."Weatherly 011 10 - 3 5 3Jim Thorpe 031 45 - 13 7 5Kane, Isom (5) and Frye; Holloway and Marzen. W - Holloway; L - Kane
