Lehighton boys soccer lose to Eagles

ORWIGSBURG - The Schuylkill League Kings are going to have to regroup in a hurry if they want to find a way to defend their two-year stranglehold on the boys soccer championship.

Blue Mountain came out swinging and made a statement at home Monday with an impressive 7-0 league win over Lehighton. The Indians have earned the last two titles, but before they came on board three seasons ago, the Eagles had 14 championships in their nest.Blue Mountain appears locked-in to try and recapture the top spot.A steady dose of Jonathan Benner and Mike Yeakley proved far too much for the Lehighton defense to contain.Benner booted in a hat trick, while Yeakley picked up a goal and three assists in a dominating performance. There was additional firepower in rising sophomore star Carlos Colindres, who scored twice, including the game's first point only 5:08 into the contest.Colindres' score started a first-half rally in which the Eagles jumped out to a 4-0 halftime lead. Banner rifled in a shot to the back of the net at 17:25, and he added his second goal at 22:24. He lit it up once again at the 26:26 mark of the opening stanza."Our two guys up top - Colindres and Benner - put a lot of pressure on people … they really are strong. They've both been playing really well," said longtime Blue Mountains coach Robbie Burcik, whose team improved to 4-3 on the season, but more importantly to 3-0 in Division I play.Lehighton's struggles mainly had to do with a lack of offense."We have some young kids there, and we're learning. We switch people in and out (for a change) to see what they can do," said Lehighton coach Dave Yob.Blue Mountain played defense on offense, keeping the ball the majority of time in the Lehighton end of the zone."It is what it is, we're getting limited time against some of the better teams," continued Yob. "We've got some young kids, some kids are getting a lot of minutes. We have a couple of kids that didn't play last year ... We're still working on gelling things."The second half started fast and furious as well for the eventual winners. The Eagles got an early goal from Yeakley at the 8:28 mark, and 21 seconds later, Kyle Reppy knocked in an angle shot for a 6-0 score. Colindres netted the final point of the night with an unassisted tally.A YEAR GONE BY ...The last time these two teams met was in the league championship., when the Indians laced up a 6-0 decision.WORK IN PROGRESS ...Yob called it just that, as he watched his team fall to 2-3 overall, and 1-3 in the division.NOT OUT OF IT ...Yob said his team can rebound, and feels a good win over a quality opponent could be the antacid.
