Thorpe erupts

MINERSVILLE - It must have felt like one big whoosh for the Minersville football team at Veterans Memorial Stadium Friday night.

Jim Thorpe wound up and let it fly. Oh brother did the Olympians ever. Locked in a 0-0 deadlock with 2:07 to play in the opening half, Minersville felt like it was in good graces and poised to make a statement win for first year coach Darien Buggy. But suddenly the Olympians caught fire. Fueled by quarterback Brendan Carroll, the snappy pass catching of Matt Elmore, the swift feet of Justin St. Hill, and an offensive line that started snorting fire, the scoreless battle turned into a 14-0 lead. It was the beginning of a five-touchdown scoring spree that enabled the visitors to roll to an impressive 35-0 win."We just started to step up our no huddle offense," said standout guard Derek Scott about the Olympians' late first-half explosion. It was great execution by Carroll on a pass to Elmore that lifted Thorpe out of some offensive doldrums. Carroll cooly looked off the Minersville safety, and then quickly looked back to a sprinting Elmore who had one-on-one coverage. Elmore latched on to the 22-yard heave and Jon Fikentscher booted the first of five PATs."That was such a great way he executed that pass, the way you draw it up in (practice,)," said Jim Thorpe coach Mark Rosenberger. "We teach it and Brendan executed it to perfection."Carroll saw the play developing all the way."I looked to see where the safety was, and when I saw him sliding to the (right), I knew that we had them in the right coverage," said Carroll. "I just threw it out there and Matt made a great catch."On the ensuing kickoff, Minersville fumbled the ball and the Olympians were right back in business. It began with Carroll hitting Elmore for a 30-yard gain to the 10. Three plays later, Carroll called his own number on a nifty draw play. Those two quick strikes seemed to wake up Thorpe's slumbering offense that didn't have a first down in the opening quarterThe second half was a different story, however, as the Olympians were about to unleash lightning in the form of St. Hill. The 5-10 junior darted, dashed and zoomed his way for 142 rushing yards including a scintillating 59-yard sprint to the end zone on the first play of the second half."Our offensive line was tremendous," said St. Hill with a bubbling smile. "They just opened up everything for me. And I just ran where I was supposed to."St. Hill wasn't alone in carving up the Miners on the ground.Freshman CJ Selby scooted for 84 yards on 10 carries, including an 8-yard touchdown run that made it 28-0 with 7:12 to play in the third quarter. The final Olympian score came on a two-yard run from sophomore Max Schlenner."We didn't yell or scream at the half, we just told our kids to calm down and take control," said Rosenberger. "We had all the momentum. Our offensive line really came off the ball. Our trapping game is a big part of our offense and we needed to kick the edge out a little more."MEN ON THE LINE ... Rosenberger signaled out the play of Billy Munson, Derek Scott and Jon Fikentscher on the offensive line.SUPER SKILL PLAYERS ... Elmore made a fantastic one-hand, highlight-reel catch of a pass for a 33-yard gain. Rosenberger praised both Elmore and St. Hill for their big offensive games and Owen Snisky for his outstanding all-around performance.IMPROVING ... After an opening night loss, Thorpe is on a three-game roll and is at winless Shenandoah Valley Friday.
