Perschy powers Palmerton by Bangor

Palmerton's Garrett Perschy has the never lose, never quit attitude.

His professional-like approach to the game that he loves was evident during the Bombers' 35-13 Colonial League victory against Bangor last Friday. The Palmerton quarterback was a jack-of-all-trades, completing 17-of-28 passes for 267 yards, while gaining 129 yards on the ground. His dominant performance earned him the Times News Player of the Week award."Our mentality the last two weeks was to just do whatever it took to win," said Perschy. "Early in the season, 0-3 wasn't what we wanted. We knew that was in the past. Coming in against Pen Argyl, we knew we were going to win and that's the mentality we had. I'm trying to preach to these guys that's the mentality we need every week, whether we play the best team in the league or the worst one. It's a tough league no matter who you play."The Bombers' signal-caller played a huge role in the 75 points his team has posted in its last two victories. Perschy has completed 32-of-48 passes for 496 yards through the air, while adding another 140 on the ground, during that time. The senior was also a big part of the Bombers' state playoff run on the baseball diamond. He's carrying over that same perspective and philosophy to the football field."Baseball season was something else," Perschy reminisced of last spring. "That's what we're trying to do this football season. We won when we were the underdogs and nobody expected us, so we're trying to help these guys understand that. You don't have to be predicted to win in order to win a district championship."His wingman in the backfield, Mike Statsko, is another big part of Palmerton's offensive success. The two hooked up for a 24-yard touchdown through the air during the second quarter last week."We've had that connection since growing up in booster club," explained Perschy. "When Mike is out there, I know I can always trust him to make the play. When times in need, I know he can go get it. At the same time, when all eyes are on Mike, it opens up plays for our other guys. We have a lot of talent on this team, and we're definitely starting to work together. Communication is a lot better and you can see that over these last two wins."Perschy is the clear leader of this football team. Some people were born to be natural leaders, and Palmerton head coach Chris Walkowiak agreed."Garrett is a three-year starter and captain, which says a lot about his leadership ability and how much he means to this program," explained the Palmerton coach. "He showed it as a freshman when he ran the scout team. You knew he was going to be something special. He can throw, run, and make all of the decisions. He has a strong arm, and he's the one that makes our offense go."Perschy has thrown eight touchdowns and just one interception this year. He'll look to continue his strong play down the final stretch of his senior season."I have a good feeling about this team," he said. "I think our best memories are yet to come."
