Marian powers past Panthers

Seth Paluck averaged 12 carries per-game entering Week 5.

However, he touched the ball 32 total times on Friday and he made sure to make the most of it.The sophomore tailback collected 223 total yards and headlined a 48-18 Schuylkill Football League victory against Panther Valley."Work horse," simply stated a horse Colts' coach Stan Dakosty after the game. "He's a tough kid and a great talent. He's going to be a great one before he's done. He played really, really well."The offensive line was moving, while the run-game unexpectedly received a boost from its leading tackler, Kyle Plesch.Plesch made his first appearance at fullback and noticeably helped pave the road for Paluck all evening. "I have to put it on my team and my linemen," said Paluck, who found the end zone three times. "Our new fullback was dominating tonight. They all made some huge holes for me."The Colts jumped out to a 21-0 lead in the first quarter after a pair of Paluck scores and a 51-yard, play-action bomb from Ethan Kuczynski to Anthony Collevechio."It feels good to break out a little bit offensively," Dakosty said. "Panther Valley hung in there and played a scrappy game. They made us work all the way through the fourth quarter. You have to credit Coach Davis and Panther Valley."The Panthers punted five-straight times to open the game. But on the fifth one, the Colts' kick returner was whacked and he fumbled. Panthers' frosh Elias Tavares fell on the loose change. After the takeaway, the mysterious momentum factor kicked in on the immediate PV play. Panthers' QB Hunter Kennedy rolled out, bought time, and found Danny Gilberry on the run for a 38-yard score, which made the game 21-6 in the early stages of the second period."We fell behind early, but our kids battled their tails off," said Panther Valley head coach Matt Davis. "They could have easily rolled over and it could have been over at halftime. But they fought and that's what we challenge them to do. We had opportunities to make plays. There were a few times where they (Marian) let us in the game, but we didn't take advantage of it."Another Colts' turnover before halftime resulted in Kennedy throwing another scoring-strike to tight end Tristan Blasko on fourth-and-goal, which cut the deficit to 28-12 at intermission."We're a work in progress," noted the Marian coach. We do have some things to clean up, but I'm very pleased with the effort." After the break, the Colts marched downfield on a 7-play, 65-yard drive to extend their lead to 34-12.Dakosty's defense was clicking too and helped Marian pull away. The second-best statistical run-defense in the Times News area held the Panthers to minus-28 rushing yards. The pass rush was lethal, too.Kennedy was brought down frequently and never had time to throw .And at the end, it was another talented defensive linemen, Nick Erbe, who jumped at the line of scrimmage and ran back an interception with 3:23 left to wrap it up.It's evident that a run-game and defense is still a blueprint to success, and Dakosty is the architect of this 2016 Colts' project."Our defensive front is really the core of our team," said the Marian coach. "The kids played hard and it's a great win for our program."BIG GAMES ... Despite constant pressure from Plesch and company, Kennedy threw for 157 yards and two scores. It was the second-most amount of yards that he's thrown for in a game this season. His main target was Gilberry, who had six grabs for 127 yards and an interception at cornerback.THIS ISN'T SO BAD ... Along with a handful of sacks, Plesch's first-two carries of the season were both bruising one-yard touchdowns. He finished with two carries, two yards, and two scores."I got moved to fullback this week, it was my first time," he said. "It was good to try something different and it worked out well. The line of scrimmage wins the game. If we can control that every week, we have a good chance to get a win on our side."
