PV aims to stop ES North

Maximizing each possession has been vital to Pleasant Valley's success.

The Bears have flourished on offense, averaging 458.9 yards- and 47.6 points-per-game en route to a 6-1 record this season.Pleasant Valley will look to continue to make the most of every snap Friday night against Eastern Pennsylvania Conference rival East Stroudsburg North in the Times News Game of the Week. The Timberwolves (3-4) feature a triple-option attack, one that can control the tempo - and limit the Bears' opportunities on offense."Last year … I think the first nine minutes they had the ball, and then we got the ball, ran a couple of plays, and the quarter was over," Pleasant Valley head coach Mark Versuk said of last season's 21-13 win over East Stroudsburg North. "We only had three possessions in the first half. We had a couple more in the second half that we were able to score on and sneak out a win."But it does put a little bit more pressure and emphasis on executing every time and not making a mistake. If you can jump out to a lead against them and make them do things that they're not comfortable with, that's our plan. And I'm sure their plan is to get us off the field and try to make us squeeze the ball a little bit and try to make us force plays that aren't there and we don't want to do that. We just have to make sure we're not trying to make plays and just execute the offense like we know we can."Led by a bevy of playmakers, the Bears' offense has been hard to stop. Since a 38-27 Week 2 loss to Allentown Central Catholic, Pleasant Valley has averaged 52.6 points during a five-game winning streak.Quarterback Brandon Keyes (83-for-133, 1,617 yards, 22 touchdowns, three interceptions) and running back Mike Mitchell (109 carries, 944 yards, 14 touchdowns) lead the area in passing and rushing, while Justin Richardson (31 catches, 811 yards, 11 touchdowns) is the second-leading receiver.Keyes had a huge game last Friday against Dieruff. The junior had little trouble picking apart the Huskies' defense, throwing for 306 yards and six touchdowns in the 62-20 victory.Mitchell, Brent Beck and Mike Brown had two touchdowns apiece in the romp."I have confidence in all of my teammates," Keyes said. "When they're making plays, and I have good protection from the line, it makes it easier for me to be confident because of that."I knew in the offseason, just with the guys we had and the work ethic we had, that we were capable of doing very well. We had an idea coming into the season that if we lived up to our standards that we could do well."While Keyes directs the Bears' attack, so too does Timberwolves' signal caller Thomas Melchiorre. The senior is enjoying another stellar season, rushing for 1,034 yards (172.3 YPG) and 15 touchdowns to go along with 378 yards and five scores through the air on 19-of-46 passing."You can't simulate the option at practice," Versuk said of preparing for the East Stroudsburg North offense. "We can give them the looks, we can lineup and run it, but it's not the same as what they're gonna be seeing Friday night. So they have to know their (ES North's) linemen are going to be firing off the ball a lot harder than our scout team, just because they run it all the time. They know how the offense is run and for our kids, you try to show them in a week how to run the option, and you just can't do it."The quarterback pitching the ball, the look is just not the same, especially with their quarterback (Melchiorre). He's exceptional. They just have to realize it's going to be turned up about five decibels on the meter before the game starts."Sitting third in the District 11 Class 6A power rankings with only two games remaining after Friday night, Pleasant Valley appears primed to make a strong push in the postseason. But for now, Versuk is making sure the Bears are focused only on what's in front of them."We just have to take it one at a time here," Versuk said. "We just want to do one at a time. That's what we've been doing all year, just take it one at a time and one day at a time."Right now our focus is on North, and hopefully we come out of here Friday night healthy and with the win."
