Pleasant Valley's offense continues to roll
"Aggressive," Pleasant Valley head coach Mark Versuk said, when asked to describe his team's offense in one word.
The first-year coach witnessed his team shut out Pocono Mountain East, 57-0, and all other signs prove that his word choice is pretty fitting. The Bears racked up 51 points in the first half of play, enforced the mercy rule in the contest (not for the first time this season), tallied 41 points in the first quarter, scored touchdowns on six of their first eight possessions, and produced points on all but one of their first-half drives, and only needed 29 plays to do so."Aggressive" seems apt.The Bears' senior tailback Mike Mitchell made the most of his opportunities to carry the ball, as he rushed for 214 yards in the game. The impressive part of that is that he only played the first half. Even more impressive was that he needed only six carries to manufacture that total."I had great blocking tonight and really, I only needed to make one move or so," Mitchell commented afterward. "We're glad to get the win in 'the Bucket game;' we treated it like it was senior night, and it's a great feeling to be able to bring it back home."Mitchell, who scored three times in the outing, along with his teammates were heard chanting, "We got the bucket!" throughout the post-game celebration, as the storied rivalry between the two schools continued. Since 1961, the two sides have battled, and Mitchell was glad to make his impression felt in this one.On the first play from scrimmage, the speedy talent broke loose and raced away from the pack for a 61-yard run to open up the scoring. The ensuing pooch kick was recovered by Anthony Claudio, and three plays later, Brandon Keyes connected with Michael Brown for a 17-yard score.Another Mitchell sprint yielded six more and the Cardinals attempted another set of downs. However, their punt was blocked on fourth-and-15, and Alexander Salvero recovered the loose ball in the end zone. At that point, it was 27-0 with 6:28 left in the first. With the score 51-0 at the intermission, the Bears' bench was cleared and given plenty of varsity game experience, which Versuk was content with."It was a good win and I was happy to see the young guys get in and get experience," Versuk said. "The coached did a great job and as far as the starters go, we needed to stay focused because this was a rivalry game and we had to make sure that we did what we had to do."GAME PLAN... At 8-1, the Bears return home next week to host Stroudsburg, realizing the importance of the game. "Next week, we're going to have to focus on execution and being disciplined. With Stroudsburg, you can't have any turnovers, bad plays or blown coverages, so it's all about execution and discipline," Mitchell said.FIERCE RIVALRY?... At one point in the first half, a contingent of the Bears' student section made their way around the track to the Pocono East student section. With the potential for problems on most on-lookers' minds, it was nice to see the two sides conversing, laughing, smiling and getting along. Apparently, the two schools contain friendships that span the rivalry's divide.CARDINAL CRISIS ... The Cardinals committed five turnovers in the game, including four fumbles. They were also just 4-for-20 passing the ball and had six penalties for 50 yards.
