Fillies advance to D-11 final
MINERSVILLE - As Marian began its quest for a fifth straight District 11 title, head coach John Fallabel looked to Chicago Cubs manager Joe Maddon for guidance.
"Do simple better," Fallabel said, repeating one of Maddon's famous lines and what he wants from the Fillies in the postseason.Marian stuck to the plan Thursday night, sweeping Mahanoy Area 25-11, 25-12, 25-22 in the Class A semifinal. The victory puts the Fillies in Tuesday's final at Martz Hall against Nativity, a 3-2 winner over Salem Christian in the other semifinal.Fallabel didn't like everything he saw on the court at Minersville's Thomas Fitzpatrick Gymnasium. But the venerable coach reinforced his straightforward approach."I work hard at what I do," he said. "The team is successful because I expect them to do certain things and to act a certain way, and have certain pride in what they do and learn the game of volleyball."Tonight I saw a million mistakes. Sloppy play; especially in that last game. … But we're doing good; we're doing well."Marian showed why it was the top seed, dispatching the Golden Bears in just over an hour.Jasmine Mooney once again played a big role in the Fillies' success, recording 22 kills and seven digs.Gianna Agosti dished out 29 assists, while Miranda Antiga came up with seven digs, five kills, four aces and Antonina Zeleniak tallied four aces and four digs. Antonia Galasso had a team-high eight digs and Emily Meier a team-best five aces. The well-rounded effort kept Marian in command, especially in the first two games as the Fillies raced out to 7-0 and 5-0 leads, respectively, and never trailed.Mahanoy found its footing the third game. The third-seeded Golden Bears took their first lead of the contest at 1-0, and battled back from 18-11 and 22-13 deficits to make it 24-22 before a service error produced the game-winning point. The late surge was simply too little, too late."It's really been a game of a roller-coaster ride and keeping them at that level, where they level off, to keep increasing and getting better," Mahanoy head coach Jason Green said afterward. "Even tonight was an example, where they were kind of flat and didn't have the same emotion they did Tuesday night (in a 3-0 win over Shenandoah Valley in the quarterfinals)."Unfortunately, it took them until the third game to start stepping it up and actually playing like they can do. They're very young. I'm expecting them to make mistakes, but at the same time I'm expecting them to learn from them. I'm proud of what they did this season. They're very young and I'm expecting them to be very competitive in the next couple of years."Kendall Bernardyn had nine digs and three kills for the Golden Bears. Caitlin Honus finished with nine assists and five digs, Madison Cavenas recorded six kills and Samantha Gnall contributed 10 assists."Mahanoy Area has a very nice young team," Fallabel noted. "They're going to be serious in a few years."FAMILIAR FOE… Marian and Nativity will be playing for the District 11 Class A championship for the fourth straight season. The Fillies were victorious 3-1 in 2013 and 3-0 in 2014 before pulling out a 3-2 thriller a year ago.FAMILIAR FACE… Green has ties to the Marian. He was briefly the program's head coach after Nikki Hackenberg retired before Fallabel took over after serving as an assistant under Green.REMEMBER WHEN?… The last time Marian was not in a Class A final was 2011, when Nativity beat Tri-Valley 3-1. The last time Nativity was shutout of the championship game was 2012, when Marian topped Tri-Valley 3-1.
