RailRiders trophies on display

It was a great season for the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders.

The Yankees' Triple-A affiliate won the International League championship for the first time since 2006. The success didn't stop there, as Scranton/W.B. also earned the National title for the first time in its existence. The hardware from those two championships - The National Championship trophy and the International League Governor's Cup - were on display at Schick's Café in Tamaqua recently. The National Championship trophy will forever be in the RailRiders' possession. However, the Governor's Cup is passed from one champion to the next every season. The National Championship Game and the trophy that goes to its winner is relatively new to minor league baseball. The game, between the champions of the International League and the Pacific Coast League, was first played in 2006. On the other hand, there is almost a century worth of history associated with the Governor's Cup, making it a must-see for baseball fans. The Cup was first awarded to the International League champion in 1933.Billy Steiner, a Tamaqua native and Marian High School graduate, has been with the front office of the RailRiders for 10 years. He brought the hardware to Tamaqua to give his hometown a show-and-tell."(This year) was one of the most unique seasons for the organization," said Steiner. "There was a new manager and a complete changeover of the team. We ended up winning the Governor's Cup with a lot of Double-A kids."Everyone on the team, as well as the front office, brings their A-game every night. We want to provide the best customer service, and that's how we treat every trip to the ballpark."Fans from all over Carbon and Schuylkill counties came to see firsthand what the championship trophies look like. One couple, the Millers of Mahanoy City, have traveled to every major league and minor league ballpark in the country. They were ecstatic to check out the championship hardware up close."That's our goal. To get people from the area interested and up to the ballpark," said Steiner. "You can jump on Route 81 and when you get off the exit, it's right down the street. It's the same distance to the Lehigh Valley."Instead of going to see a movie as a family activity on a weekend, we want you to come out to the ballpark."The team has many unique holiday packages, which offer unique experiences for ticket holders."This is the Coal Region's team," said Steiner. "The hard work and success of the team and the front office speaks for itself, and now we have trophies to share. There are always people coming to our stadium for the first time, so that's how we treat everyone there."I've always been a Yankee fan, so it works out great when you are working for your dream team."
