Despite low numbers, hopes high for PV wrestlers
Scholastic sports, like most things, are cyclical. Trends, like wins and losses, come and go.
So, too, do numbers, and how many student athletes decide to participate.Wrestling is no exception.Entering his fourth season as Pleasant Valley's head coach, Justin Micklos is in the middle of the sport's ebb and flow, with turnout down from previous years."Obviously, numbers aren't where we want them to be," Micklos said. "But it kind of goes with the territory."Though the Bears, who have 13 wrestlers on their varsity roster, will struggle to fill all 14 weight classes in their lineup, Micklos is excited about what's coming in the next few years."We have a junior high program that has 25 kids out this season," Micklos noted. "So I'll be seeing them in the near future."It took a little bit to build that back up, but now we're getting there."In the interim, Micklos will be tasked with replacing Trent Thomas (33-6), Jason Jacobi (30-8), Garrett Gouger (19-11), Shane McDermott (11-9) and Will Focht (7-6) from last year's team.Thomas, the Northeast Regional champion and District 11 runner-up, was the only Pleasant Valley wrestler to qualify for the PIAA Class AAA tournament."As a team, we're missing some weight classes," Micklos said. "We hope to do well. But missing that many weight classes, it's going to be hard.""Individually, we have some very talented individuals that should do very well."Trevor Dorn (27-11, 170), who took fourth at districts and fifth at regionals, looks primed to have a stellar senior season."He's looked great," Micklos said of Dorn. "He's put the time in over the summer and the sky is the limit for him this year."Senior Colby Frey (182) and junior James Gehr (132) gained valuable experience last season, and will be counted on to be major contributors this year.Senior Jonathan Klein (132), juniors Daniel Valdner (113), Wayne Blizzard (138), Craig Choynowski (170), Alex Anderson (220) and Spencer Mease (220), along with sophomores Justin Rojas (132), Anthony Mazzella (182) and Nicholas Mazella (182) should fill out the lineup.Hannah Hunter appears set to be the Bears' 106-pounder, and Micklos has liked what he's seen from the freshman so far."She's been rolling around with the best of them in there," he said. "She's one of the kids. She's no different than any of the other kids. The guys don't treat her any differently. She's a wrestler, and she treats them the same way. It's great."Hunter has a great role model to look up to in Samantha Klingel, a 2011 Pleasant Valley graduate who went on to national success at King University."I have no doubt in my mind that Hannah can succeed the same way she did," Micklos said of his expectations for Hunter.Though the numbers might have dipped, Micklos has made sure the team's work ethic hasn't."This year, even though we have low numbers, from a coaching standpoint - we always want more numbers - but being that we only have 12 or 13 kids on our team this year, it's great because you can spend more time with each kid individually," he said. "So each kid is growing more than if I'd have 20 or 30 kids in the room."The Bears will get a chance to see where they stand this weekend at the Saucon Valley Invitational."I'm looking forward to the year," said Micklos. "I can't wait for Saturday to get it started."
