Phantoms part of PPL Center All-Star game
The Lehigh Valley Phantoms will be hosting the 2017 AHL All-Star Classic at PPL Center later this month, and three of their players will be representing the Phantoms on the Atlantic Division team. Taylor Leier, Jordan Weil and T.J. Brennan were named to the team.
In addition to the game, which will be played on Jan. 30, players will compete in the AHL All-Star Skills Competition on Sunday. The AHL will also hold their annual Hall of Fame inductions at Allentown's Symphony Hall.This year's inductees include Billy Dea, Bryan Helmer, Rob Murray and Doug Yingst. Murray played 15 seasons in the AHL, and opened the 2000-01 season with the Philadelphia Phantoms and was the team's captain, but ended up finishing the season with Springfield. He also coached in the AHL with Providence after his playing career ended.Instead of being divided into teams representing each of the conferences, teams will be made up of players representing each of the four AHL divisions in a round-robin style tournament to determine the winner. Games will be 10 minutes each and will be played three-on-three, with the two top teams playing for the All-Star Championship.Leier just returned to the Phantoms recently after spending 10 days with the Flyers. Even with his time away, the 22-year-old forward is currently tied for fifth among Phantoms players in total points with 21 (seven goals, 14 assists). Leier was drafted by the Flyers in the fourth round of the 2012 Draft and finished second on the team in goals (20) and points (49) last season.Weal and Brennan are battling for the top spot in points among Lehigh Valley players, with Weal holding the lead with 33 points and Brennan second with 30 points. They are also first and second in assists (22 for Weal, 19 for Brennan). Weal, 24, ranks fifth in the league in points.The Flyers signed Weal, who was with the Calder Cup Champion Manchester Monarchs last season, where he was named the playoff MVP when he picked up 22 points in 19 postseason games with Manchester.Brennan is a Willingboro, New Jersey native, who is in his eighth professional season, and will be playing in his third straight AHL All-Star Game, his fourth overall. Like Weal, Brennan is in his first season with the Phantoms after playing for the Toronto Marlies last year. This season, Brennan leads all AHL defenders with 10 goals.LOOK WHO'S BACK... Goalie Anthony Stolarz was returned to the Phantoms from the Flyers when Michael Neuvirth was activated. In his stint with the big club, Stolarz made four appearances and went 2-0 with a 1.79 goals against average and a .938 save percentage. Goalie Martin Ouellette was returned to the Reading Royals to clear a spot for Stolarz on the Phantoms roster."It was a good experience. My biggest thing was I just wanted to get in games, kind of go out and show that I can play at that level," said Stolarz.LOOK WHO'S BACK, PART 2 ... Mark Alt returned to action with the Phantoms on Friday, playing in a game for the first time since a preseason shoulder injury. Alt had to make his way through waivers, but cleared around mid-day on Friday and was added to the roster for the road game at Hartford.STRIKING EARLY ... In games where the Phantoms score first this season, they are 18-5-0-0, and are 13-2-0-0 when leading after the first period. The 18 wins when scoring first are the most by any team in the AHL this season.
