Weatherly council candidates

Four four-year terms on the Weatherly Borough Council are up for grabs. There are five candidates, including Theresa D’Andrea, Harold Farrow and Jeffrey Miller, who appear on both the Democratic and Republican ballots, Democrat Leslie Moyer and Republican Norman Richie.

We asked candidates for bio information and what they would do to improve the community through the office they are seeking.

Farrow and Miller did not respond in time for our deadline.

Leslie Moyer

Bio: I am a seventh generation lifelong resident of Weatherly, a proud Weatherly Wrecker Class of 2003, wife of a professional and volunteer firefighter and mother of two wonderful children. I studied business at both LCCC and Penn State. I am currently the assistant general manager of a local golf course/restaurant.

Question: Community involvement is on the rise in Weatherly. If elected I hope to help continue this movement by bringing fresh, discerning ideas and more importantly by being a voice for its citizens. I want to listen to the concerns of the residents, help provide prompt, resourceful solutions to any issues and to ensure Weatherly continues to be the wonderful community in which I am proud to raise my children in. I would be honored to serve Weatherly as a borough council member.

Norman Richie

Bio: Seeking fourth term on council, a lifelong resident, born and raised in Weatherly; 1975 graduate of Weatherly High School. Attended classes at Penn State University and Luzerne County Community College.

Married to wife Phyllis for 38 years.

Employed by GT Industries, Reading, as a product development and design engineer.

A council member for the past 12 years, vice president for the past 10.

Honorary member of Citizen’s Fire Co. for the past 23 years and a member for the past 43 years.

Past member of the Weatherly Ambulance, serving as chief for five years. One of the first EMTs in Weatherly, held the certification for 25 years.

Question: If reelected, some of my goals are to work with council and the borough manager to complete the new police station, magistrate’s office and borough building, while continuing to work on Rails to Trails to bring more businesses into the borough.

I will continue to support our police so Weatherly residents have a safe and secure community to live and walk the streets.

I will work with the borough manager and the other six members of council to create a cohesive group that will work as one unit in the best interest of Weatherly taxpayers and residents.

Overall goal is to listen to what the residents of Weatherly have to say and for Weatherly to prosper and grow in the future.

Theresa D’Andrea

Bio: Theresa I. D’Andrea was married to the late Joseph E. D’Andrea. They had four children, four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She retired from Weatherwood in 2010. A member of Our Lady of Lourdes Church, she serves as a lector and Eucharistic minister.

D’Andrea is involved in many community organizations. She serves as chaplain of ALA Unit 360, Weatherly Friendship Club and borough council. She also serves on the board of directors of United Charities.

Question: I would like to preserve the small town atmosphere here in Weatherly, while promoting its schools, service organizations and beautiful park would be a priority. Maintaining public safety by supporting our police force, fire company and ambulance association is also very important, while trying to keep a reign on taxes for the benefit of our residents, especially our large senior citizen population.

I would like to encourage and help create new business and employment opportunities for the residents in our community in the future. I will strive to keep town control of our electric supply.
