Colts do it again

POTTSVILLE - Just call them the "Comeback Colts."

For the second straight game, Marian stared a double-digit deficit straight in the eye and didn't blink.Just three nights after rallying from 11 points down to beat Moravian Academy in the District 11 Class 2A semifinals, the Colts topped that on Friday at Martz Hall. Trailing Shenandoah Valley by 13 points in the second half, Marian staged another incredible comeback to stun the Devils 59-51 and claim the district championship.Anyone who followed Marian this year shouldn't be surprised. That's because several times during the regular season, the Colts proved that no deficit was too big.So when Marian fell behind Shenandoah 35-22 with just over three minutes left in the third quarter, it never panicked and never doubted itself. After all, the Colts had been there and done that before."We're not afraid of deficits," said Marian coach John Patton. "We would rather not have them, but our kids aren't bothered by them. They never lose confidence and never doubt their ability to come back."This is a group of kids that doesn't believe in losing."During the regular season, Marian faced big deficits against Lourdes, Jim Thorpe and Shenandoah and came back to win all of those games. Add in the two district games, and it's obvious that the Colts are never out of a game."Our mindset is that we just refuse to lose," said the Colts' Anthony Collevechio. "When we fell behind, no one put their heads down and no one stopped believing that we were going to win."We worked hard this entire season to get this opportunity. So we weren't going down without giving it our best effort."With Patton using a nine-man rotation and players substituting in and out with the frequency of hockey line changes, the Colts are a team loaded with role players.Patton said the second-half performance was a microcosm of the Colts season."Everyone who got into the game made a contribution," he said. "Brandon (Mohammed) and Ryan (Karchner) controlled the interior. Jarod (Paisley), Tyler (Fritz), Noah (Stauffer) and D.J. (Mummey) all hit huge three-point shots. Anthony (Collvechio) once again had a great game defensively, and Jake (Paluck) and Mike (McLaughlin) gave us nice minutes off the bench."Nobody cares who shoots the ball or who grabs the rebound. All they care about is finding a way to help the team win."Karchner, who was one of four Colts in double figures, said the key to last night's comeback was everyone knowing their roles and no one trying to do too much."Coach told us at halftime that we needed to stick to the game plan and not panic," said Karchner. "We picked up the defense, we started limiting them to one shot, and we stopped turning the ball over."Everyone did their job and that's what allowed us to come back like we did. Whether it's making shots or getting rebounds or playing tough defense, everyone knows their role."Collevechio echoed Karchner's words."Coach Patton knows his players well and he makes sure we all know our roles," said the senior defensive specialist. "One of the keys to our success this season is everyone playing for we rather than playing for me."Because the Colts did that, they got to "play" for a District 11 championship - and because of another incredible comeback, they "are" District 11 champions.
