Audenried ousts Thorpe
Postseason runs can be fun.
The Jim Thorpe boys basketball team learned that this season, winning two postseason games and advancing to the District 11 4A championship and the state tournament for the first time since 1992.However, sometimes good things must come to an end. The Olympians learned that lesson as well over the weekend, running into a buzz saw in the form of the Audenried Rockets. The District 12 power used its athleticism and length to pressure Jim Thorpe, defeating the Olympians 84-36 to advance into the second round of the state tournament. The plot of this game featured two main acts. Turnovers and rebounding, which both were in the favor of the Rockets (18-5).From the onset, Audenried established its dominance in both, jumping out to a 30-7 lead after one quarter. The Olympians turned the ball over 10 times in the frame with the Rockets converting eight field goals from Thorpe's miscues."We like to get up and down the floor, that's our style of play. I told the guys to be real aggressive early, to get transition opportunities and easy looks, so we could gain some confidence," said Rockets head coach Kenyatta Bey. "Our kids really played hard and they always do, it was a good team win for us."The Olympians (14-12) turned in their best quarter of the game in the second stanza, actually outscoring the Rockets. The Olympians were more aggressive in going to the basket during that stretch and did a much better job of handling Audenried's pressure.Thorpe's big three in Brendan Carroll, Chris Micciche, and Matt Elmore came through in the second quarter, combining for 13 of the Olympians' 15 points. But still, the Olympians trailed by 20 at the half."We fought hard and we played hard, but sometimes, especially in the state tournament you're going to run into a team that's bigger, stronger, and faster and that's what happened today," said Thorpe head coach Jason McElmoyle. "You can't simulate the type of team speed and length that this team has. We haven't seen anything like it all season and they're really good at what they do."The third quarter went a lot like the first. The Olympians had troubles once again with the Rockets pressure turning the ball over eight times. Thorpe's turnover woes led to a 33-5 advantage for Audenried in the quarter."Today obviously didn't go the way we wanted, it's tough to lose, but I'm just so proud of these kids and what they were able to accomplish," said McElmoyle. "I would go to battle with this group any time and they did something that no one did in 20-plus years. They laid the foundation this season for what we're trying to do here. It was truly a great season."LEADERS ... There were many stars on the night for the Rockets, starting with Damir Prescott, who scored a game-high 32 points. Terrence Moore and Nisheem McNeal-Wright added 22 and 21 points, respectively. For Thorpe, Brendan Carroll led the way with 10.MOORE WANTED MORE ... Audenried's Moore kept getting more and more rebounds as the game went on. The 6-6 forward dominated the boards, collecting an impressive 17 rebounds.TURNOVER TOWN ... The Rockets' pressure was stifling on the day, forcing Thorpe into 26 turnovers.AUDENRIEDPrescott 12 8-11 32, Smith 0 0-1 0, Parks 1 0-0 2, McNeal-Wright 7 6-9 21, Jackson 0 0-0 0, Fagan-Haynes 2 0-0 5, Azeem Bey 1 0-0 2, Moore 10 2-2 22.
