NL rebounds with shutout win
Northern Lehigh might have stumbled in Wednesday's season opener against Salisbury.
But the Bulldogs didn't have to wait long to get back on track.Northern Lehigh returned to form Thursday, picking up a 10-0 Colonial League win in five innings over Moravian Academy."It's a big confidence booster for us, absolutely," said Bulldogs' head coach Greg King. "Just to be able to produce runs, get the bat on the ball and do things offensively that we just couldn't do (against Salisbury). (Wednesday) we had four errors, but we also only had three hits."The miscues in the field, coupled with the struggles at the plate, led to an 8-1 loss on Wednesday against the Falcons.Northern Lehigh (1-1) had no such trouble Thursday.Though the Bulldogs recorded just four hits, they put the ball in play and took advantage of seven errors by the Lions."We talked about our approach yesterday," said King. "We talked about our approach at the plate. Instead of looking at first-pitch fastballs, jump on the first-pitch fastball. Don't sit there, fall behind in the count and swing at a curveball that's not a good pitch to hit."That aggressiveness was on display early, as Northern Lehigh manufactured its first run without a hit.Austin Hemingway reached on an error to open the bottom of the first, stole second and moved to third on Brandon Hess' ground out. Hemingway scored on Jacob Kistler's sacrifice fly to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead."Definitely a lot more confident at the plate I'd say," said Hemingway. "We had to come out and we had to be a lot more confident at the plate. (Wednesday) we definitely just had first-game jitters."Hemingway finished the contest 1-for-3 with three runs scored and two RBIs. The senior hit a rocket to left field in the third inning, driving in courtesy runner Zachary Long and scoring on the play when the relay throw was bobbled to make it 3-0.The Bulldogs added another run in the third when Luke Eitner's single plated Gio Colon to make it 4-0. Northern Lehigh broke the game open in the fourth, batting around and scoring six runs to make it 10-0.Anthony Evangelist (1-for-2) collected two RBIs for the Bulldogs. Michael Berger (1-for-2) also drove in a run. While the runs piled up, Colon did his part on the mound. The junior recorded three strikeouts and allowed just two walks and five hits in the five-inning shutout.Gabe Rodriguez had two of the Lions' five hits."First start, obviously," said Colon. "And I just went out there and I was feeling it. I threw a lot of good pitches. A couple of balls here and there. But I bounced back, stayed in the game, and it's a huge victory."King is hoping the Bulldogs can maintain their momentum."We definitely had first-game jitters (Wednesday), and to get that out of the way was good," he said. "Hopefully we can keep it rolling."LAST TIME… Northern Lehigh opened Colonial League play last season with a 2-1 loss against Moravian Academy.SETTLING IN… King had high praise for Colon, who is still getting acclimated to his role with the team. "I hope it's a confidence boost for him, to know that he can do it and he can do well. This is his first year of varsity. He's pitched a little varsity before, but it's kind of his first time being full time with the varsity team. Hopefully that will give him confidence that he can go out and he can be successful," King said.Moravian Academy 000 00 - 0 5 7Northern Lehigh 103 6x - 10 4 0Rodriguez, DuBreuil (4), Buck (4) and Scarperi; Colon and Rudolph.
