Blue Sox edge Schuylkill Valley
Isaiah Kupchinsky and Brady Akins thought they would need some time to settle in at the plate.
Both looked just fine in Tamaqua's come-from-behind win over Schuylkill Valley on Tuesday.Kupchinsky laced a two-out double in the bottom of the sixth inning to tie it, and Akins dropped in a single that scored Kupchinsky and lifted the Blue Sox to a 10-9 Schuylkill-Berks Legion victory over the Falcons."We're all a little rusty with the bats, switching over from metal to wood," said Kupchinsky, who finished 2-for-4 with three RBIs."But today we played a great game. We put the ball in play, and the fielders made our plays that we needed to."Akins, who is coming off his freshman year as a pitcher only for the Lehigh Carbon Community College baseball team, couldn't remember the last time he got to swing the bat."I haven't hit in so long," said Akins. "In college, I was a PO (pitcher only) ... I just tried to get in there and get swinging again. It's tough. I did the best I could."It feels good."Tamaqua (1-1) led 6-1 heading to the top of the sixth inning before Schuylkill Valley batted around and scored eight runs to grab a 9-6 advantage."We have a lot of young players, and it's the second game," said Blue Sox coach Todd Heisler. "It's the second game. They're not gelling together yet. "But they showed a lot of heart coming back, staying on it, and being able to get the win."While Kupchinsky and Akins drove in the tying and winning runs, the rally started when Noah Evans, Brady Moyer (2-for-3, two runs scored, RBI) and Nick Breiner (2-for-4, two runs scored, RBI) started the bottom of the sixth with three straight hits to load the bases for the Blue Sox.With the bases full, Dair Miller grounded out to Schuylkill Valley pitcher Michael McGinn to score Evans and cut the deficit to 9-7.McGinn got Casey Rother to pop one up to first baseman Joshua Jacavage to put Tamaqua down to its last out trailing by two runs with Moyer at third base and Breiner standing at second. But Moyer scored on a passed ball with a 1-1 count on Kupchinsky to make it a one-run game as Breiner advanced to third base on the same play.Kupchinsky drove in Breiner to tie it, and Akins delivered the game-winner down 0-2 in the count."I tell them to go out there and do your job, get it done," said Heisler. "And that's what they did."Schuylkill Valley (1-6) tied it at 6-6 on a double from Tyler McCole that scored David Cook and Cory Zimmerman (2-for-4, RBI).Jacavage (2-for-4, two RBIs) reached on an error that allowed two runs to score in the top of the sixth to give the Falcons an 8-6 lead. With the bases loaded, Hunter Johns grounded into a fielder's choice that scored Austin Dietz to put Schuylkill Valley up 9-6.Akins, who entered with one out in the top of the sixth, struck out the side in order in the seventh to end the game.WORTH THE WAIT... Akins arrived midway through the game after working in Philadelphia earlier in the day. Though he didn't start, he was on the lineup card and certainly made his presence felt. "I wasn't sure ... I had work and I couldn't get here on time like the rest of the guys that show up. So it was a privilege to get in, and actually throw a little bit."Sch.
