Lehighton downs SH

SCHUYLKILL HAVEN - There may very well be a new sheriff in town if the first two roundups are an indication of what may come.

Lehighton has opened the 2017 season on a much better note than it ended last season, and win two may be the start of a momentum builder for coach Tom McCarroll's head-hunting Indians.Riding a rock-ribbed offensive line, which plowed through highly ranked Schuylkill Haven, Lehighton carved out an impressive 30-14 victory to move to 2-0 on the young season."This doesn't happen without our offensive line," said Lehighton quarterback Cody Scherer. If it weren't Scherer dashing, ducking and plunging, there was senior running back Taquan Chambers knifing inside for huge runs in key situations. And when Scherer needed to pass, he had sure-handed wide receiver Zach Crum, who hauled in for 85 yards."He's got such good hands, he seldom drops a ball," smiled McCarroll. "All (Scherer) needs to do is put the ball up (near him) he's going after it and he makes plays."To be sure there were plenty of plays, but the one that rings out the loudest came from defender Chris Whiteman. Just when it seemed like Haven was going to pull some momentum to its side, mainly because of the sensational running of sophomore Kobe Brish, Whiteman stole the thunder with a pick. The junior came up and snagged an interception, then high-tailed it down the sidelines 36 yards to pay dirt with 2:58 to play in the first half."That was so, so big," said Carroll. "We turned things around there. The way Brishh) could take over running the ball can put a lot of pressure on any defense. The kid's a beast. But that's the way they play football. Coach Mike Farr's team is very tough to beat. They took it to us last year (running) but we did some nice things tonight."Brishh is certainly ticketed for postseason honors, especially the he performed here at Rotary Field. At 5-9, 195, the kids a load and tough to bring down, as he pounded out 228 yards on 30 carries scoring a touchdown. And one of the most impressive runs he had was early in the fourth quarter with the game still in the balance at 22-14.Brishh broke off a staggering 29-yard, and when the Indians were hit with a late flag, the ball moved even closer to the 12. Seemingly knocking at the Lehighton door, the Indians needed to make a play in a hurry. Up stepped lineman DakotaHiesterr with aman-sizeded play, droppinBrishsh with a five-yard loss at the nine."Our defense just came up with such a big effort. It turned things in our favor. "(Schuylkill Haven) is so tough in the (red zone), but we made the plays down there."QUICK STRIKE ... The Indians sent an early message on their opening drive, going 65 yards on nine pla - s-capped off when Chambers banged home the final three yards. There were two huge plays that sustained the drive; the first was a 31-yard completion to Crum othird-and-sevenen. Four players later, Crum and Scherer were hooking up again, this time a fourth-down 29-yard pass play, in which Lehighton needed 17 for a first down. With 5:50 to play, Chambers added the coup de grace with an 18-yard run to slam the door on Haven.TIP-TOI …G… Whiteman had remarkable balance after he latched onto the interception and tip-toed along the Schuylkill Haven sidelines, managing somehow to stay in bounds.BALANCE WINS O …T… The Indians had a total package on the offensive side of the ball. They ran for 206 yards and passed for another 176.
