Proclamation honors those who work in the prison system

A proclamation declaring the week of May 2 through 8 as "Corrections Employees Week" was adopoted by the Schuylkill County commissioners at a work session held Wednesday at the courthouse in Pottsville.

The proclamation is to honor the people who secure and perform safe operation and management of facillities in correctional institutions, which include administrators, correction officers, counselors, treatment specialists, educators, clerical support staff, business administrators and purchasing agents, personnel and labor relations, clergy, medical professionals, food service specialists, computer technicians, planners and research analysts and skilled craftspeople upon whose skills efficiency and professionalism the functions of Pennsylvania's correctional system depends.The Pennsylvania system is the oldest in the nation beginning in 1773. County Prison Warden Eugene Berdanier accepted the proclamation.Other businessBids were opened for courthouse security identification cards and for plowing and hauling of snow and ice, salt and cindering for county facilities. One bid was received for each project.ADT Security Services, Reading, bid $10,765 to supply the security cards. Guers Topsoil and Mulch Products Inc., New Philadelphia, submitted a bid for hourly use of equipment and cost of a ton of plowing and salting.The commissioners approved stipulations reached by all parties on re-assessment of certain properties sought by Pine Grove Area and Minersville Area school districts. The compromised agreements will now be submitted to court for approval.The commissioners reviewed with their data base department on upgrading the computer system in the courthouse. A plan was reviewed from Comcast which promised a speedier system.
