Be a connector and part of the solution

I consider myself a great connector. I have a passion to help others, and when I have the ability to connect people for a greater good, I feel happy and fulfilled! Working with a number of great people representing a variety of organizations and businesses, I find myself gravitating to connecting people on a daily basis. I’ve made it my mission. So how do I make it happen?

I have three steps:Step one, I listen; step two, I connect; and step three, I assist with a solution.1Be a good listener. When you have a conversation with someone, listen … really listen to what they have to say. Take it all in and ask questions. Do not take time in this step to formulate your response, just pay close attention.2Once you’ve listened, work on being a connector. Who does this person need to connect with in order to solve a problem, gain more leads or embark upon a new opportunity?3Lastly, after you’ve listened, thought of the right connections for this person, help with a possible solution. Challenging yourself to “be part of the solution” will help you become a forward thinker and strong leader and trusted colleague.“Be part of the solution” — I am so thankful to have learned this powerful statement during the early days of my professional career. I’m sure many of you may have heard this on occasion, but let’s take the time to dive in to this concept and use it to your benefit.• Assess the situation• Be aware of everything at stake• Gather all of the facts• Think of a few potential solutions to the problem• Get to workThe same concept applies to everyday life and family. Most of us are faced with challenges one time or another that surface regarding health issues, financial strains, aging parents and the growing pains of our children. Again, take the time to be part of the solution, communicate, be respectful, be a good listener and be a connector. You’ll gain so much along the way.Every day, I feel our job at the Carbon Chamber and Economic Development Corporation is to support our businesses by being part of the solution. A few examples include: educating members on ways to improve sales, marketing and customer service by offering training and one-on-one meetings. Hosting grand openings, signature events and business-to-business mixers as a place for members to network and meet future clients. Offering low-interest rate loans and counseling to local businesses. As staff, we are your coaches, fans and connectors. Please contact us. We are your local organization, your connectors, here and ready to serve!Marlyn Kissner is director of the Greater Lehigh Valley Chamber of Commerce.
