Three former Times News area girls basketball players are currently members of the Wilkes University women's basketball team.
Sophomores Chelsea Smelas and Emelie Meinhart, and freshman Emily Sofranko are all contributing for the Lady Colonels.Smelas, a Jim Thorpe grad, has started all six of her team's games and is averaging 6.8 points per game, 3.2 rebounds per contest and has collected 10 steals.Meinhart, who graduated from Palmerton, has scored 4.6 ppg and pulled down 1.8 rpg. She has played in five games and is shooting 9-of-11 from the field.Sofranko, a former Marian player, has been in all six games this season and has averaged 2.2 ppg and 1.8 rpg. She leads the team in steals (15) and is second in assists (21).Wilkes is currently 4-2 and is coached by Lehighton resident Chris Heery.
