Man avoids prison time when felony counts are dropped in plea deal

An Albrightsville man, facing 14 criminal counts, including four felonies, escaped a prison sentence when he reached a plea bargain with the district attorney’s office after the victim’s family requested the deal be made. He entered a guilty plea to a count of harassment, a misdemeanor 3, in Carbon County court on Tuesday morning.

Deonarine Ramessar, 69, was originally charged with felony counts of endangering the welfare of a child, unlawful contact with a minor and aggravated indecent assault, along with 10 counts of indecent assault. The conduct charge was added to the original complaint.

Assistant District Attorney Joseph D. Perilli told Judge Steven R. Serfass that the plea deal was made at the request of the victim’s father.

Ramessar was charged by state police at Fern Ridge on July 29, 2019, for incidents involving a then 13-year-old girl. Troopers accused Ramessar of having inappropriate contact with the girl at a Penn Forest Township residence.

Under the plea agreement, Ramessar admitted contacting her numerous times.

Serfass placed Ramessar on probation for a year and ordered he pay court cost of about $1,000, pay a $50 per month supervision fee, render 50 hours of community service and have no contact with the victim.
