Christmas in August

Salem-St. Paul's Lutheran Church announced earlier this month that onAug. 28, the church family would celebrate Christmas in August with gifts, such as school socks and school supplies as well as underwear in all sizes, being given to the Pleasant Valley Ecumenical Network.The event took place with the singing of Christmas carols and a general social hour. One well-kept secret was also part of the day: celebrating the pastor's special birthday with 60 cupcakes as well as a cross and a Christmas tree designed by church secretary Ruby Dunlap.The Rev. Deborah K. Sheffey was indeed surprised a she did not realize the birthday celebration part was for her even when she saw the birthday tablecloth, Dunlap said.Legion meetingsWest End Memorial Post 927 has several meetings this week.At 7:30 p.m. today, the Legion meets. The Sons of the American Legion meets at 11 a.m. Sunday.The Auxiliary meets at 6 p.m. Wednesday.Canonization recognitionOur Lady Queen of Peace Parish will celebrate the Canonization of Blessed Mother Teresa on Sunday by handing out special bottles of water to give drink to the thirsty, wrist bands with a quote from Mother and balloons for the children from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday across the street in front of Peebles.Meet & GreetSafe Haven Pet Rescue will hold a dog Meet & Greet from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday at Ace Hardware, Route 209, Brodheadsville, next to Dunkelberger's.Many young dogs will be available.
