Central Catholic cruises by Lady Panthers
ALLENTOWN - Every coach at any level always hopes for a strong start and early momentum.
Laurie Corcoran's Allentown Central Catholic squad came roaring out of the gate and outscored Panther Valley by a 50-12 margin in the first two games of its District 11 AA quarterfinal match against the Panthers. The Vikettes took cared of business in game number three and swept the Panthers, 25-7, 25-5, 25-15."We wanted to sere aggressively and I think that we fulfilled that," said Corcoran, the Central head coach. "We were working on a quicker transition on offense and we were able to control the ball."Central certainly displayed a fast offensive transition, as it opened the first set on a 15-4 run, and the second set on a 11-1 streak.Corcoran has four seniors who contribute largely to her offensive approach.Darcy Wolf is one of her senior studs that compiled nine aces and nine kills during the playoff victory. The Panthers struggled to find an answer for her vicious serve."My seniors are great leaders out there," said Corcoran. "Darcy really excels at everything especially serving and hitting. When she connects with the ball, it just goes. This team has great chemistry. They all work hard, get along, and have a ton of fun when they're playing together."Panther Valley found its rhythm late in the match as they led midway through the third game. However, Wolf broke the 9-9 tie with a few aces and service points which resulted in Central pulling away."We were hoping to give them a little more in the first two games, but I'm satisfied," said Panther Valley head coach Nancy Filer. "There's always more you want to do, but they played pretty well."Panther Valley had some solid play in the third game that included some nice Jessica Wiese serves and strong play from Emily Drissel, who was called upon to try and deal with the difficult Central serves."She always gives it her all, and if she can get it, she will get it," said Filer of Drissel. "I have a good group of girls who are returning and I rally admire this team's dedication. This was a fun bunch that always showed up to play for me. The future of this program looks bright."Corcoran's Vikettes certainly looked like a very scary fourth seed to be paired up against. The Central coach explained, "We had a very competitive season. The conference was rearranged and it was a big adjustment as a lot of very strong teams were added to it."We wanted to end up as the number two seed in districts, but we ended up here as the fourth seed. That's not where we envisioned being. We're going to try and turn something disappointing into something positive."Central travels to Saucon Valley to square off against first-seeded Bethlehem Catholic on Tuesday, October 28th at 7p.m. in the semifinals.Central is definitely getting hot at the right time and playing perhaps its best volleyball of 2014 right now."We're coming along and I think that we're getting better and better every time we step on the court. I think we're playing our best volleyball and we certainly need to be."
