Why weren't buildings maintained?

Dear Editor,

I have comments about the Lehighton Area School District building plans. Why weren't the elementary schools maintained to begin with? It seems they were left to deteriorate so we could build a new one.You wouldn't tear down your home if a roof was needed you'd fix it. The board isn't thinking of taxpayers and the expense it will be. They are already financially strapped, many on Social Security and there are no industries here to draw families.Nothing is well-planned such as placement of the school and its layout and even parking situations. Everything is changing continuously and with that is a high pricetag. We're trying to keep up with the Joneses (other districts). The difference is we don't have their tax base to pay the bill. Why will our kids be jockeyed around on buses from area to area? What about their safety as K-12 grades will all be shuttled to a small radius in Lehighton. God forbid if any catastrophe should occur. Why also are so many renovations needed at the middle and high schools to restructure cafeteria to another floor is just one example. Instead of moving things, let's fix what has to be fixed. We're becoming a generation of we get what we want whether we can afford it or not! Finally, why is it schools like the old high school weren't good enough to teach in anymore? But we are good enough for other offices to be there? Will our four elementary schools be the same? Probably so! It is our money, but we have no say. The board doesn't listen to us!Sincerely,Judy AhnerFranklin Township
