Thorpe blasts Midd-West

Jarrin Geisinger is a big play waiting to happen.

Geisinger only had four touches from the line of scrimmage on Friday night. He turned those touches into 134 yards of offense and five touchdowns.

That’s the definition of big-play ability. It’s also the definition of efficient.

Geisinger scored on runs of 32 and 22 yards, on receptions of 23 and 57 yards, and for good measure he recovered an Olympian offensive fumble in the end zone.

Thanks in large part to his big game, Jim Thorpe rolled to a 55-7 mercy-rule victory over Midd-West.

“I just try to take advantage of my opportunities,” Geisinger said. “Every time I touch the ball, I’m looking to make the most out of it.

“But I couldn’t do anything without my teammates. Roberto (Santiago) gave me a couple of perfect passes, and my line did a great job of blocking and creating holes. They make it easy for me.”

Geisinger certainly did make things look easy as Midd-West had a hard time touching him, much less tackling him.

“Jarrin showed great vision and made some great cuts tonight,” said Jim Thorpe coach Mark Rosenberger. “Then when he found an opening, he did a great job of just turning it upfield and accelerating. He’s the District 11 sprint champion, so once he gets free, no one is catching him. He had a fantastic performance.”

Geisinger wasn’t alone in piling up big offensive numbers as Olympian halfback CJ Selby ran for 230 yards and one touchdown on just 17 carries.

“CJ (Selby) was really physical running the ball and also showed some speed by getting outside of containment on a few runs,” said Rosenberger. “But as good as the backs played, a lot of credit has to go to our offensive line. They did another great job of moving people off the ball and creating running lanes.”

Thorpe jumped out to a 14-0 first-quarter lead on a 23-yard Santiago-to-Geisinger pass and a Selby 14-yard run.

But on the first play after the Selby score and the final play of the opening quarter, lightning struck for Midd-West in the form of speedster Hunter Wolfely. Wolfely did what no one else has done against the Olympians this season — score a touchdown. He did it on a 76-yard explosion down the right sideline.

If the score stunned Jim Thorpe, you would have never known it.

The Olympians answered with four second-quarter touchdowns and never allowed Midd-West to cross midfield the rest of the game.

“I love how are kids responded after giving up that touchdown,” said Rosenberger. “Nobody dropped their head after our scoreless streak ended. Instead, we came right back on the field and scored a touchdown and then kept right on rolling.

“It’s nice that we got tested early in the game and faced a little adversity — and responded to it like we did. That’s something you love to see as a coach.”

Leading 41-7 at halftime, the Olympians kicked it into mercy rule on the second play of the third quarter when Santiago lofted a perfect strike to Geisinger who had gotten behind the defense for a 57-yard TD.

REALLY SPECIAL TEAMS ... Not only did Olympian kicker Chris Condly go a perfect 6-for-6 on his extra-point attempts, but Rosenberger raved about his kickoff coverage unit. “Chris was kicking the ball deep and our coverage team did a great job of getting down the field and making tackles. I think we kicked off eight times and seven times Midd-West started inside its 25-yard line,” said Rosenberger. “We have a lot of young kids and non-starters on that unit and they did a great job.”

BIG PLAYS ... Thorpe ran just 40 plays from scrimmage (33 runs, seven passes) and piled up 458 yards of offense for an average of almost 11 and a half yards per play. Of the Olympians’ 40 plays, 18 went for 10 or more yards.

STILL PERFECT ... Jim Thorpe moves to 5-0 and opens Schuylkill Division 1 play next Friday night against North Schuylkill. Midd-West falls to 2-2.
