JT woman pleads guilty in theft of shotguns

Several defendants entered guilty pleas Thursday before Carbon County Judge Steven R. Serfass.

Steals gunsJestine Elizabeth Sarau, 36, of Jim Thorpe, pleaded guilty to receiving stolen property.She admitted stealing three shotguns from her father-in-law, Henry M. Sarau of Penn Forest Township, around Oct. 11, 2013, and then selling them at a pawnshop.Sarau told the court she used the money to help feed a drug addiction problem.Sarau told Serfass, "I apologize for what I did. I hurt my family and kids."Sarau was given a break by the commonwealth in a plea bargain, Serfass noted. She faced a possible state prison term if she was sentenced in the standard range of state sentencing guidelines, but the agreement called for a mitigated range sentence.Serfass went along with the plea agreement and sentenced her to serve one day less 12 to one day less 24 months in the county prison.She was also ordered to get a drug and alcohol evaluation and follow any recommendation for treatment, supply a DNA sample, make restitution of $275, and when released on parole render 100 hours of community service. She was given credit for 108 days spent in jail to date on the charges.Other pleasOther defendants who entered pleas included:Wesley Lynn Behler, 22, of Lehighton, pleaded to one count each of theft from a motor vehicle and possession of an instrument of crime.He was arrested by Lehighton police for an incident on Dec. 10, 2013, in the area of Alfie's Pizza shop along S. First Street.Police responded to a report of a disturbance. On scene officers found Behler being detained by Leroy Gaston. Gaston caught Behler inside his vehicle going through the glove compartment. Behler had taken a necklace and change from the vehicle, which were recovered. Police also found Behler in possession of items used to break into vehicles.Serfass sentenced him to time served (23 days) to 23 months in prison on the possession count and one year probation on the theft charge, with the terms running consecutively.He was also ordered to render a total of 150 hours of community service.Noah Schaeffer, 21, of Lehighton, entered pleas in three pending cases.He pleaded to two counts of theft and one of retail theft. The thefts occurred on April 27 and May 4, 2013, both in Lehighton, with the listed victims being Thomas Schaeffer and Stephanie Petrucci. The retail theft occurred at the Wal-Mart store in Mahoning Township on May 2, 2013.Among the items taken in the thefts was a Nintendo game unit and cash, and various items with a listed value of $649 in the Wal-Mart incident. Those items were all recovered.Serfass placed him on probation for a year on each count running concurrently and ordered he get a D&A evaluation, and render a total of 200 hours of community service.There was no restitution required in the two theft cases.Zachary Wayne Watson, 27, of Dover, Del., and formerly of Lehighton, pleaded to one count of persistent disorderly conduct.He was charged for an incident on Aug. 8, 2012, in the 300 block of Alley E by Palmerton police. He was previously placed in the county's Accelerated Rehabilitation Disposition probation program for first-time offenders but was revoked for not completing the conditions.Serfass placed him on probation for a year and ordered he render 50 hours of community service.Scot W. Serfass, 51, of Lehighton, pleaded to one count of fake or doctored items. He was arrested by Mahoning Township police on Nov. 23, 2012, for operating a vehicle with an expired inspection and having a registration not for the vehicle he was operating.He was previously placed in the ARD program but was revoked for failure to complete all conditions.Serfass placed him on probation for a year and ordered he render 50 hours of community service.John Tworkowsky, 21, of Albrightsville, and formerly of Lehighton, pleaded to one count of theft.He was arrested by Mahoning Township police for taking a necklace belonging to Jeanine Graham.Tworkowsky said he sold the necklace to get money to feed a drug habit.Serfass place him on probation for 18 months and ordered he get a D&A evaluation and render 75 hours of community service.Troy David Kuntzman, 38, of Palmerton, pleaded to one count of resisting arrest with a charge of aggravated assault dropped.He was arrested for an incident on Jan. 3 at his residence at 375 Lehigh Ave. He struggled with borough police who responded to a report of a drug overdose. Kuntzman was highly intoxicated at the time, defense counsel Matthew Rapa said.Serfass placed him on probation for two years and ordered he get both D&A and mental health evaluations and render 100 hours of community service.Robert Hrobak, 24, of Shohola, Pike County, pleaded to disorderly conduct as a summary offense.He was arrested for an incident on Jan. 24, 2013, when he took eight galvanized ash cans of Tammy Green, 148 S. First St., Lehighton. A theft count was dropped in a plea bargain. The cans were recovered.Serfass imposed a fine of $300.Each defendant sentenced must also pay court costs, which average about $1,000, and pay a $50 per month supervision fee while on probation or parole.
