Jim Thorpe High School hosts 50-year reunion

Jim Thorpe High School Class of 1964 gathered Sept. 18 at the Mahoning Valley Country Club to celebrate its 50-year reunion. Thirty-five members attended.

Reunion Chairman Ed Solomon welcomed everyone and introduced the committee, which included Bill Diehm, Sharon (Deats) Kobal, Ann Louise (Klotz) Hayes, Jon and Greda Weaver, Darlene (Witt) Benyo and Bea (Koons) Ladd.The invocation was given by Diehm. Guest speaker was class President Jeff James. Eileen (Windbeck) Morgan gave a presentation that honored the deceased members of the class. They are: Barry Nester, Max Acker, Bohn Barno, Steve Bretzik, Mary Alice (Coppie) Wolfe, Michael Gavornik, David Kimmel, Marie (Leonard) Spencer, Charles McHugh, Audrey Miller, Ronald Miller, William Rhoades, Mary (Rimsky) Heydt, Thomas Schlecht and Robert Snyder.As she read the names, Kay (Feuerstein) Murphy lit a memorial candle.During the reunion, Eileen and Jack Morgan distributed challenge coins with the Class of 1964 logo on them, along with the class flower, that they had made special for the event.The reunion included an entire weekend of events.On Friday classmates attended a football game and a deck party at Molly Maguires. Saturday began with breakfast at a local restaurant and then on to the high school for the dedication of a granite bench, which is inscribed with the class motto. The bench has been placed in the high school lobby.Tom Lesisko, principal, conducted a tour of the high school. A train ride was held in the afternoon.Over the past year, members of the class gathered monthly for lunch at local restaurants. This was coordinated by Harry Eisenhart and Eileen Morgan. The class also participated in the Jim Thorpe Halloween parade, and collected and donated canned goods to the Jim Thorpe food pantries.
