Carbon gets $10K for victims/witness program
A program to help victims of crimes in Carbon County received a little bump in funding from the state.
During the county commissioners' meeting on Thursday, the board approved the acceptance of an additional $10,037 for the 2015-2016 Rights and Services Act subgrant from the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency for the victims/witness program. The money is above the initial designation of $57,354, approved in November 2014.Commissioner William O'Gurek said the additional funds are a result of adjustments being made and the state providing an additional 35 percent to counties for the program.The victims/witness program helps people who are victims of adult crimes and is administered through the district attorney's office.The program helps victims of crimes who don't understand the criminal proceedings that will be taking place when someone goes into the system. The county contracts with the Victims Resource Center, which provides a counselor that works with the district attorney's office and prison to help the victims.The counselor prepares notifications for the victims on their rights in these cases and what will be happening.In other matters, the following items were acted on:• Approved the contract with Trinity Services Group of Oldsmar, Florida for food service at the county prison. The three-year contract totals $909,264, which is based on 228,000 meals annually. The cost per meal per year will be $1.29, year one; $1.329, year two; and $1.369, year three.• Approved the Children and Youth Second Quarter fiscal year 2015-2016 Act 148 invoice/report. The report will result in the county receiving $22,718.32 in Title IV-E AA funds, $277.85 in Medicaid administration funds, $10,586 in TANF funds and $3,186.09 in ITG grant funds.• Approved the appointment of Ryan A. Richards, county office of planning and development programs coordinator, as the Carbon County representative voting alternate to the Northeastern Pennsylvania Metropolitan Planning Organization Technical Planning Committee for the term July 1, through June 30, 2018. The action is due to the resignation of Eloise Ahner, county administrator, from the alternate position.• Adopted a resolution honoring Lehighton on its sesquicentennial.• Approved the employment separation of Michelle L. Clark of Weatherly as a part-time customer service clerk, domestic relations, effective June 30.• Approved the resignations of Bailey D. Becker of Albrightsville, summer laborer, Liquid Fuels, effective June 29; Jacob F. DeMatto of Summit Hill, lifeguard, Mauch Chunk Lake Park, effective June 29; Zachary T. Gulla of Summit Hill, part-time parking/meter attendant, effective July 2; and Tracy Jean Nistico Marasheski of Jim Thorpe, secretary II, district attorney's office, effective July 15.• Approved the hiring of Noah G. Goldberg of Jim Thorpe, summer laborer, buildings and grounds, effective July 5; and Suzette A. Kurtz of Lehighton, temporary parking attendant, effective July 1.• Approved the leave of absence for Bernard C. Markey of Summit Hill, part-time parking attendant, from July 4 to Sept. 26.
