Dimmick, Penn Kidder library director discusses plans

The Dimmick library in Jim Thorpe and Penn Kidder branch in Albrightsville have a new director.

Taking the position in June, Victoria Ryan-Price said she “always loved libraries.” and earned her Masters of Library Science degree at Kutztown University.

Prior to taking the position at Dimmick, Ryan-Price was a technical service librarian at the Scranton Public Library and library director at the Shamokin Public Library.

Ryan-Price is working towards a rotating collection at the library in order to “get library cards into kids’ hands.”

This includes partnering with schools for events like “Read Across America,” where Dr. Seuss books are read. The goal would be to provide the books to the school. It would also include providing books on specific topics for students that coincide with their school studies. As there are less and less school librarians, this is a need that can be filled with the libraries support.

More outreach is planned in schools such as allowing children to sign up for library cards at certain school events. This includes Nov. 17 at Penn Kidder for math and reading night, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Ryan-Price will be at this Title I event to talk about library services and sign people up for library cards.

Jane Eyre is Ryan-Price’s favorite book as “I like the combination of Gothic and feminism for that time period with women brave enough to leave a bad situation.”

Highly recommended for young adults is “The Hunger Games” and the “Escargot” series for children.

“Libraries always felt like a natural fit for me,” Ryan-Price said. She found comfort in studying and doing her work at the Anders library at Bloomsburg University. As the new librarian, she is hoping to involve the community more. The mission is to open doors and encourage the community to learn that “the library is not just a building.”

When Ryan-Price is not working or reading, she enjoys spending time with her husband and son. She enjoys making wreaths and is listening to more and more audiobooks, enjoying them while doing chores.

Chair yoga is held from 6:15 to 7 p.m. Thursdays at the Penn Kidder branch. Follow the Facebook page for more upcoming events.
