Palmerton falls to Executive Education

ALLENTOWN — Executive Education had an answer every time Palmerton threatened to turn the momentum Thursday night.

And more often than not, it came in a hurry.

Behind five touchdowns from quarterback Shawntez Whitsitt and a series of explosive plays, the fourth-seeded Raptors pulled away for a 41-18 victory over the fifth-seeded Blue Bombers in the District 11 Class 3A quarterfinals.

Palmerton (7-4) had its chances, forcing an early turnover and twice pulling within 10 points. But missed opportunities and Executive Education’s ability to strike quickly proved too much to overcome.

“Football’s a game of opportunities,” said Palmerton head coach Chris Walkowiak. “You make your opportunities, and you’ve got to take advantage of opportunities.”

Few teams took advantage of theirs quite like Executive Education (6-5).

Whitsitt threw three TD passes and ran for two more, including a 93-yard run in the second quarter. The Raptors also scored on plays of 71, 65 and 57 yards, repeatedly turning potential momentum swings into points.

The first came after Palmerton appeared poised to take control midway through the opening quarter. After Whitsitt connected with Lezius Bravo for a 36-yard score, Palmerton needed just two plays to respond. T.K. Gursky found Connor Lawless for a 61-yard TD, cutting the deficit to 8-6.

The Bombers then forced a fumble on Executive Education’s next possession, with Cooper Henry recovering at the Raptors’ 12-yard line.

But a holding penalty pushed Palmerton backward, and after the Bombers moved to the 8, Dexter Connor blocked a field-goal attempt.

Executive Education capitalized, with Whitsitt connecting with Connor for a 71-yard touchdown that extended the lead to 15-6 with 1:42 remaining in the first quarter.

“That was one opportunity that we could have taken advantage of, and we didn’t,” Walkowiak said.

The Raptors delivered another blow early in the second quarter. Facing third-and-10 from his own 7, Whitsitt broke free for a 93-yard TD run, pushing Executive’s lead to 22-6.

But Palmerton wasn’t finished.

The Bombers put together a scoring drive late in the half, converting a fourth-and-1 at the Raptors’ 22 on a 14-yard run by Michael Gary.

Two plays later, Gursky found Cale Young for a 9-yard TD with 48 seconds remaining, trimming the deficit to 22-12 at halftime.

The score gave Palmerton some momentum, particularly with the Bombers set to receive the second-half kickoff.

Executive head coach Kyle Haas, meanwhile, wasn’t particularly pleased with his team’s performance despite holding a 10-point advantage.

“That was an interesting halftime locker room because I walked in and we’re up 10, and I felt like we were down 25,” Haas said. “So I had to tell them, ‘We’re still winning the game.’”

Palmerton moved from its own 25 to the Executive 30 on the opening possession of the second half, but the drive stalled when the Bombers were stopped for a loss on fourth-and-2.

The Raptors responded with a six-play TD drive, capped by Whitsitt’s 7-yard run to make it 28-12 with 5:31 left in the third.

Once again, Palmerton fought back.

Gursky found Lawless for a 40-yard touchdown to finish a 63-yard drive, pulling the Bombers within 28-18 with 2:07 remaining in the quarter.

But the momentum lasted only nine seconds of game clock.

On Executive’s next snap, Whitsitt found Kohbe Davis for a 65-yard TD, pushing the lead to 35-18.

The Raptors added their final score in the fourth. Taking over at their own 43, Ayden Ramos broke loose for a 57-yard scoring run with 8:31 remaining.

“At the end of the day, we just didn’t make enough plays,” Walkowiak said. “They made plays, and that’s football.”

Haas credited his team’s difficult schedule with preparing the Raptors for the postseason. Executive entered Thursday on a four-game losing streak against opponents from the Philadelphia area, but Haas believed the competition had helped his team improve.

“We’re a better football team than we were Week 1 because of who we played,” Haas said. “We haven’t played our best football game yet. Hopefully it’ll be next week.”

The Raptors advance to face top-seeded Northwestern in the semifinals.

For Palmerton, Thursday marked the end of a seven-win season and the final game for 11 seniors.

The Bombers battled injuries throughout the season, including Thursday when Mason Heilman returned from a broken leg to contribute despite not being fully healthy.

Walkowiak praised the willingness of his players to step into unfamiliar roles and continue competing regardless of the circumstances.

“They don’t complain. They just do their job to the best of their ability. I just like the grit. There’s a bunch of fight in them, and they’re always going to give you what they have.”
