Comeback sends Panthers into semis

Facing an early deficit, Panther Valley never panicked.

The second-seeded Panthers rebounded from a first-set loss to defeat Saucon Valley 3-1 Tuesday night in a District 11 Class 4A girls volleyball quarterfinal.

Despite falling behind 1-0, Panther Valley battled back to win three straight sets, 26-24, 25-22 and 25-19, punching its ticket to the semifinals.

“This is a team that has a real desire to play the game and they love the game. They really do enjoy being out there on the court and they work hard in practice. I’m very proud of the way they were able to battle back tonight,” said Panther Valley head coach Nancy Filer. “Credit to Saucon Valley, though. They wanted it as bad as we did, and that was evident in how they came out in that first set.”

No. 7 seed Saucon Valley came into the “black hole” and stunned the Panthers, taking the opening set 25-21. Saucon jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead thanks to back-to-back blocks from Cassidy Ash, and its height at the net proved to be a challenge for Panther Valley throughout the match.

The Panthers eventually found their rhythm, chipping away until Danika Blazosky hammered a shot down the right side to give PV a 16-15 lead. But from there, Saucon Valley took control. A key block by Hailey Harlacher ignited the surge, and the Panthers were outscored 10-5 the rest of the way. A kill by Lila Parsons capped the strong opening set for Saucon Valley.

The Panthers knew they needed the second set, and they came out firing, surging to a 6-1 lead behind kills from Sophia Paton, JaeLynn Browdy and Blazosky. But Saucon Valley refused to go away, later tying the set at 16-16.

Panther Valley regrouped and pushed ahead to earn set point at 24-22, only to see SV rally again. An ace from Karinhayza De La Rosa and a strike by Victoria Dyavgo leveled the score. A Saucon error then put PV ahead 25-24, and a clutch kill from Nina Thorpe sealed the set, tying the match at 1-1.

“After that first set, I thought we played with a lot of energy and I thought our communication improved as the game went on. We were out there working together and that helped us rally,” said PV sophomore middle hitter Sophia Paton. “I thought we also made some good adjustments. We saw what they wanted to do up front after that first set, and then we were able to cut down on our mistakes and make the plays we needed to make.”

The Panthers turned to their hammer in Browdy late in the third set to seize a 2-1 lead. Trailing 19-17, a powerful kill from Browdy cut the deficit to one, and moments later another Browdy blast put PV ahead 20-19. From there, Browdy went into full terminator mode, delivering two late strikes from the left side that Saucon had no chance of defending and helping close out the set for Panther Valley.

“I thought we got a little down on ourselves in that first set, but then we were able to turn it around. Our confidence continued to grow throughout the match, especially after we tied it up at 1-1 and cut down on our errors,” said Browdy. “And then I knew there were times throughout the rest of the match where I needed to put the ball away, and my teammates gave me great passes and I was able to do that. But I’m just really proud of the way we fought back tonight. We’re a team that works really well together, and that’s why we won tonight.”

The Panthers made the fourth set far less dramatic, maintaining control for most of the frame. PV jumped out to a 10-5 lead after a kill from Kathryn Breslin, and back-to-back aces by Jessica Hackash added to the momentum. Hackash continued to power the offense, delivering consecutive kills to stretch the lead to 20-13 later in the set. Fittingly, it was Browdy who closed things out with a perfectly placed kill into an open spot on the right side, securing a 25-19 set win and a 3-1 victory.

STAT LINE ... Browdy led the way with 20 kills and 25 assists. She recently surpassed the 1,000-career-assist mark. Hackash added 15 kills, while Paton chipped in with 12 kills. Breslin contributed 23 assists, and Jovie Breiner (12 digs), Thorpe (13 digs) and Hackash (13 digs) were solid defensively for PV.

NEXT UP ... The Panthers will face No. 3 seed Northwestern in a District 11 Class 4A semifinal Thursday at 5:30 p.m. at Martz Hall.
