Lehighton rolls to win over Bombers
Running the football effectively and creating turnovers has long been a proven formula for winning football games, and on Friday night, Lehighton showed once again why that approach works.
The Indians controlled the line of scrimmage from the opening snap against Palmerton, piling up 161 rushing yards in the first half while forcing four Bomber turnovers. Behind a dominant performance that led to a 35-0 halftime advantage, the Tribe rolled to a 49-7 victory, snapping their two‑game skid and getting back on track.
“We wanted to minimize the self inflicted wounds that hurt us so much last week and I thought we definitely did that. We established the line of scrimmage, which is what we wanted to do and we got out of the gate really fast,” said Lehighton head coach Tom McCarroll.
“We challenged our kids this week to come out and play well. We know that they’re better than the product that they put on the field last week. They know it too, so I was really proud of how they came out and answered the bell.”
Lehighton wanted to set the tone early on the ground, and it wasted no time doing so. On their opening possession, the Indians marched 65 yards in eight plays — all runs — to take a 6-0 lead with 7:57 left in the first quarter. Lukas Croizier powered the drive, carrying six times for 59 yards and finishing it off with a 3‑yard touchdown run.
Following an interception by Cash White on Palmerton’s third‑and‑eight from its own 37, the Tribe went right back to its bread‑and‑butter. Leaning again on the run game, Lehighton pushed the ball to the 20-yard line. A 15‑yard facemask penalty and a 12‑yard Croizier burst provided big chunks, setting up a 20‑yard speed sweep by senior Jose Rodriguez.
Rodriguez made a sharp cut and sliced through the Bombers’ defense to extend the lead to 14-0 with 3:41 remaining in the first quarter.
The Bombers’ turnover troubles continued throughout the remainder of the first half. Two more interceptions — one by Aiden McCarroll and another by White — kept the door wide open for the Indians.
“The turnovers tonight were crucial. Again, we challenged our kids to go out there and make plays tonight. I thought our guys looked more focused this week and when the opportunity was there to make a big play they executed. Cash White stepped up and had a great game for us, and so did a lot of other guys that maybe didn’t make those kind of plays last week” added McCarroll. “And then on top of the turnovers, we were really able to get our run game going.
“We know what we have with the size of our offensive line and with a workhorse back in Croizier, so the message all week was to stay focused, stay disciplined and do your job. A missed block here or a missed block there doesn’t allow you to sustain drives and our guys up front played good assignment football which kept the chains moving.”
Capitalizing on the momentum from Palmerton’s miscues, Lehighton put together another clock‑eating, run‑heavy drive to push its lead to 21-0. The Tribe covered 46 yards in 10 plays, with Croizier once again punching in a short‑yardage touchdown.
On Palmerton’s next possession, White struck again. Breaking on an overthrown pass near the Bombers’ 35-yard line, he made the read and returned the interception all the way to the six. Two plays later, Croizier powered in to stretch the advantage to 28-0.
Lehighton then completed the trifecta with a special teams score at the 2:15 mark of the half. With Palmerton punting from its own 26, Croizier burst through the middle and blocked the kick, allowing Carl Lingham to scoop it up and take it in for a touchdown, pushing the Indians’ lead to 35-0.
“Turnovers will hurt you in a game like this and we talked about that coming in. We knew we couldn’t turn the ball over. And then our play up front was not good enough and we also had too many penalties. This loss tonight is on everyone. Not just the players, but we as coaches need to coach our guys up better. We need to get back to work now and get better,” said Palmerton head coach Chris Walkowiak.
“Credit to Lehighton. We knew they wanted to try and establish the run game and they leaned on us heavily with their big guys and they were pushing us off the ball. Overall, we just need to perform better in a big game environment.”
Lehighton was able to tack on two more scores in the fourth. Peyton McLean scored on a short power rush and sophomore Vincent Hill added a 48-yard scamper up the middle. The Bombers were finally able to get on the scoreboard with 7:29 to play in the game on a Connor Lawless 47-yard touchdown run up the right sideline.
BELL COW ... Croizier put together yet another night of tough running, carrying the ball 17 times for 139 yards and three touchdowns. On the season, he has now surpassed the 1,000-yard mark and has 16 rushing scores after tonight’s performance. Lehighton rushed for 271 yards in the game.
WHERE THEY STAND ... Lehighton improves to 6-3 and currently sits in the No. 4 spot in the DIstrict 11 4A power ratings. Palmerton drops to 7-2 and is currently slotted in at the No. 4 spot in the 3A ratings.
