NW girls roll past Indians

Northwestern Lehigh scored goals in bunches Monday night at Bombers Stadium in Palmerton.

Four different times they scored a pair of goals within 2:30 of each other, and also had a run of three goals in three minutes.

The result was a 10-1 win over Lehighton in the Colonial League quarterfinals, which sends the Tigers into the semifinal round on Wednesday.

Sophia Schaffer got things started when she got to a loose ball in front of the goal and sent it to the back of the goal for a 1-0 edge.

With 33:09 left in the half, goalie Cassidy Litts came out to make a play on a run by Amelia Glassberg only to have Glassberg get the ball over to Kaylynn Knauss, who had an open goal to make it 2-0.

The rest of the half was quiet and dominated by the defenses.

Shortly after the start of the second half came the next pair of closely-timed goals for Northwestern Lehigh.

First up was Glassberg, who caught Litts coming out of the goal. Exactly two minutes later, Sophia Schaffer had trouble controlling a pass and had to give up an opportunity at a goal but sent her pass over to Knauss, who beat Litts with a shot just to her left to make it 4-0.

Coach Jordan Smith began to give some younger players time on the pitch, which worked well.

Freshman Jalyssa Kubat found herself in position to score her first varsity goal when she had a wide-open look at the goal with Litts caught all the way to the other side. Quickly steadying her nerves, Kubat took the shot and watched as the ball rolled into the net in front of her.

“They got the ball out wide to Sophia and a gap opened up. The goalie was completely out of the picture, and I just got there at the right time and played it into the goal,” said Kubat of her playoff goal.

Just 2:14 later, Juliet Snyder scored the first of her two goals in the game.

The first came off of a corner kick by Schaffer to make it 6-0. Earlier, Snyder had a couple shots either deflected or that went just wide of the goal.

It almost happened to her again when she fired a shot on goal just 1:30 after her first goal. This time, the shot sailed but stayed beneath the crossbar and Litts actually got her fingertips on the ball, but couldn’t change the direction enough and it went into the back of the goal.

“We struggled a bit in the first half just to be aggressive, but when we stepped it up and just possessed the ball better and played the way we know how to, we were able to start getting goals,” said Snyder.

Lehighton’s Claire Bridy ruined the shutout for Northwestern when she was able to make a run and get a shot past goalie Brystol Hamm that made it 7-1.

The Tigers almost seemed offended that they allowed the goal and kicked up their play a notch.

The result was goals by Lexi Kercher, Schaffer and Bella Smith that pushed the lead to 10-1 with 8:55 left.

The win sets up a semifinal game between Northwestern and Moravian Academy Wednesday night. Moravian defeated Palisades 4-1 in the other quarterfinal game.

“They’re a very good team, but we know how to deal with their better players. We just have to stay on them and we’ll be good,” said Snyder.

“We all want to win it (the league championship), and the fact that we want it that bad is what we think is going to carry us.”
