Pine Grove wins five-set thriller against Fillies

Pine Grove takes five-set thriller against Fillies

MINERSVILLE — When winning time arrived, Pine Grove Area leaned on its serving and its star.

Senior Lily Flynn racked up 11 kills, 10 digs, four blocks and three assists as the Cardinals outlasted Marian 21-25, 25-13, 25-15, 17-25, 15-7 in the first Schuylkill League quarterfinal Monday evening at Minersville Area High School. Division 1 champion Pottsville (18-0) will take on Division 1 third-place Pine Grove (15-6) at 5:30 p.m. in the semifinals tonight. The winner will advance to Thursday’s championship match at Martz Hall.

Tied at two sets apiece, libero Grayclin Griffiths opened the final set with six straight service points for Pine Grove.

Her floating deliveries produced a pair of aces during the run.

The Fillies battled to close the gap, but each time they tried, the Cardinals strung together a few points to maintain their lead.

Flynn smacked a kill off an assist by Addison Daubert, and Natalie Terry hit an ace as the lead grew to 13-5. A Flynn block to the floor ended it and sent the Cardinals to the semifinals.

Griffiths finished with 24 digs, two aces and two assists, while Daubert compiled 18 assists, 14 digs, four aces and two kills for Pine Grove.

“I think the whole team stepped up together tonight and really supported each other to try to make it happen,’’ Pine Grove coach Erin Frantz said.

“We started off a little slow, but they kind of got their rhythm, got really into the game and kept that energy. It’s the playoffs, so I told them to go out and have fun and play the best you can for each other.’’

Marian (13-6) got off to a fast start.

Tied at 20, the Fillies took the first set behind a pair of kills from Maddy Davis, who finished with 17 kills and 13 digs.

Kali Grochowski added 21 digs, six kills and eight aces; Addy Marek chipped in seven kills, six digs, three blocks and two aces; and JoElle Currie posted 33 assists, 17 digs, two kills and two aces for Marian.

A sophomore, Currie also surpassed the 1,000-assist mark for her career.

Too often, Marian couldn’t break Pine Grove’s serve to get a side out of its own.

For example, the Cardinals jumped out to a 6-1 lead in the second set and used a nine-serve run by Terry to build a commanding, 16-3 advantage.

A seven-serve run by Daubert in the third set gave Pine Grove a 9-2 lead that it rode to a two-sets-to-one lead.

“I thought our defense was great,’’ Marian coach Maria Currie said. “They were covering well, hitting a lot of open spots and defending the net well.

“I just feel like we were always trying to play catch-up once we got in that little bit of a lull. We’ve got to learn to not get into that.’’

The season continues for both Marian and Nativity. They’ll both be part of next week’s District 11 Class A playoffs, and the state-ranked squads are likely to meet somewhere along the line.
