Tigers blank No. Lehigh in quarters

Northern Lehigh goalie Madilyn Husack has spent much of the season turning away opposing shots.

She entered Saturday’s Colonial League field hockey quarterfinal against Northwestern Lehigh with 166 saves, and added nine more against the Tigers.

But while Husack continued to frustrate Northwestern’s offense, the Bulldogs struggled to generate scoring opportunities of their own. The Tigers eventually broke through for a 3-0 victory to advance to the league semifinals.

Husack was busy from the start, with much of the early action taking place in front of her. At the other end of the field, Northwestern goalie Charlotte Gober had a relatively quiet opening as the defense in front of her turned away Northern Lehigh’s attacks.

The Tigers finally broke through with 9:35 remaining in the second quarter when Ella Schmidt found an opening for her fifth goal of the season to give Northwestern a 1-0 lead.

Just under three minutes later, a shot deflected off Nora Peterson and went to Madelyn Lagowy, who redirected the ball into the goal to give the Tigers a 2-0 advantage.

“Riley (Stoudt) pulled the ball over, and I saw it tip off of Nora, so I shifted up and was able to get the ball past a defender who was on the goal line,” said Lagowy of the goal.

The sophomore credited Northwestern’s challenging regular-season schedule with helping the team maintain its composure in big games.

“We play teams like Crestwood and Palmyra during the regular season, so that really prepares us for big games like this. We just stay calm and do what we need to do to get goals.”

Lagowy had another potential goal turned away by a defender earlier in the second quarter. With Husack caught on the opposite side of the goal, Lagowy had an open look until Gracie Frederick stepped in and knocked away her shot.

Later in the quarter, Schmidt nearly added her second goal but sent her shot just wide of the post.

Northwestern extended its lead on its fifth penalty corner of the game. Lagowy fed Peterson, who scored with 6:33 remaining in the third quarter to make it 3-0.

Northern Lehigh began finding its offensive rhythm after the third goal, putting more pressure on Gober.

The sophomore goalie faced nine penalty corners, and finished with seven saves to record her 11th shutout in 19 games this season.

“I don’t really think about getting shutouts too much, I just worry about us getting it done on the field as a team and I’m just part of that,” said Gober. “Shutouts are really nice, but I just want to keep playing, be with my friends, and keep winning and advancing.”

The Bulldogs continued to generate pressure in the third quarter, but Gober and the Northwestern defense turned away their attacks. The Tigers maintained control the rest of the way to secure the shutout and a spot in the semifinals.

Northwestern will return to Catasauqua Middle School on Tuesday to face Southern Lehigh in a rematch of last year’s league championship game, which the Tigers won 2-1.

Northwestern also defeated the Spartans 2-1 during the regular season this year.

“I’m sure the target is on our back, and they’ll come out really hard against us. They probably have a bit of a vendetta against us from the championship last season,” said Northwestern coach Lissa Opolsky. “They’re obviously well coached, and I believe it will be a very fast-paced and high intensity type of game.”

SAVING THE DAY ... Gober recently reached the 100-save milestone, an impressive accomplishment considering how rarely opposing teams generate sustained pressure against Northwestern.

Opolsky estimated that more than half of Gober’s saves have come against powerhouse opponents such as Palmyra (29 saves), Crestwood (16) and Oley Valley (18).

A former goalie at the University of Iowa, Opolsky believes Northwestern’s defense draws confidence from having Gober behind it.

“As a goalie, you never want to face too many shots back there, but when you have someone like Charlotte back there, everyone feels very confident in her ability to keep the ball out of the net.”
