A large garage was destroyed by a fast moving fire Friday night in Mahoning township and the owners said it was caused by a large tree falling on power lines just minutes earlier at a neighbor’s home.

The incident began around 8 p.m. when the Mahoning Valley fire company was dispatched to a tree and wires down at a home along the 2500 block of Hemlock Drive.

A short time later a fire was reported at the adjacent property in a large garage.

When firefighters arrived on scene they found the wood frame structure fully involved in flames.

The owners of the  building claim it was a power surge from the tree falling on power lines.

Fire companies from throughout Carbon county responded to the blaze.
