Northwestern shuts down Lehighton’s ground game to remain unbeaten

Northwestern Lehigh and Lehighton both rely on run-heavy offenses, so heading into their Friday night matchup, it was clear that whichever team could control the line of scrimmage and contain the ground game on defense would hold the edge.

When the dust settled, it was the Tigers’ front seven that delivered a dominant performance, bottling up the Tribe’s rushing attack and holding them to just 32 yards. That effort paved the way for Northwestern’s 35-17 victory, keeping the Tigers unbeaten at 7–0.

“I thought our defensive coaches once again put a phenomenal game plan together and put our guys in position to be successful, and then it’s up to our kids to go out and execute and they did,” said Northwestern head coach Josh Snyder.

“(Lukas) Croizier is very good at being patient and waiting behind his line and then he explodes through, but there were no creases or seams for him and then our guys swarmed to the ball carrier and there were a lot of black hats in there on every play. And we said to our guys, ‘If we can come out and get a quick stop to start the game and then go down and score that would be huge.’”

Coach Snyder got exactly the start he wanted from his team. The Tigers opened the game by forcing a quick three‑and‑out, clogging up the middle to shut down the Tribe’s rushing attack before turning things over to their own offense.

Solid gains on the ground from Chase Sukanick and Brady Zimmerman pushed Northwestern into plus territory at the Lehighton 44. But an offensive pass interference call on first‑and‑ten pushed the Tigers all the way back to their own 41. Just a few plays later, facing third‑and‑long, Northwestern delivered one of its biggest conversions of the night.

Trey Snyder flipped a screen pass to Zimmerman, who found the edge and sprinted 56 yards to the Lehighton 2‑yard line. Sukanick then punched it in to give the Tigers a 7-0 lead.

The Tribe (5-2) continued to struggle to get their offense going in the first quarter, but they were able to generate some momentum on the defensive end, with Aiden McCarroll coming up with a big interception off a deflection in the middle of the field with 43 seconds to go in the first. Lehighton took over at the Northwestern 48, but couldn’t take advantage punting just a few plays into the drive.

“They’re really tough up front. I know we have some big boys up front, but we didn’t execute up front in the run game. You know, I thought we had some shots and some opportunities here and there in both the run game and the pass game, and they executed better than we did and that was the difference in the game,” said Lehighton head coach Tom McCarroll.

“But I’m really proud of our kids’ effort tonight. They never quit and they fought to the end. That’s something we can continue to build off.”

However, on that punt, a strange sequence of events handed the ball right back to the Indians and set up their first points of the night. The punt was actually blocked by Northwestern behind the line of scrimmage, but it then ricocheted off a Tigers player, turning it into a live ball.

Lehighton pounced on it at the Northwestern 35-yard line. The Indians moved the ball to the 14 after a pair of key connections from Jack Lucykanish to Carl Lingham that kept the drive alive. But on third‑and‑twelve, Fritz Scheirer came up with a big sack, forcing Lehighton to settle for a 40‑yard field goal by Sawyer Hoffman, which was good, trimming the Tigers’ lead to 7-3 with 4:20 remaining in the first half.

But as the Tigers so often do when they get the ball coming out of halftime, they managed to punch in a crucial score before the end of the second quarter. A good kickoff return by Sukanick brought the ball out to the 46, and 11 plays later, Snyder found Sukanick wide open on a check‑down.

The junior turned upfield, sprinted toward the left pylon, and lowered his shoulder through a Lehighton defender as he crossed the goal line, extending the lead to 14-3 with just seven seconds remaining.

The Tigers wasted no time stretching their lead to 21-3 coming out of the half.

A burst from Zimmerman on a 45‑yard run moved Northwestern inside the 20, and a few plays later he finished the drive with a 1‑yard plunge to put the Tigers firmly in control.

“We’ve been practicing really hard on the two-minute drill. To be able to execute that and score with minimal time left, knowing we get the ball coming out of the half was a big swing in the game,” said Snyder.

“And then we got the score coming out of the half, so that’s a 14-point swing and that can take the wind out of the sails of the other team and make them a little more one dimensional than they want to be for the rest of the half.”

The score held heading into the fourth, with Lehighton’s defense forcing two punts to keep its hopes alive. Meanwhile, Northwestern’s defense continued to smother the Indians, forcing another punt and then an interception, with Brady Krimmel hauling in an overthrown pass.

Another Tigers score at the 9:15 mark of the fourth made it 28-3 putting the game out of reach for the Indians. A nice pitch and catch from Snyder to Lucian Sterling from 18 yards out made it a four-possession game.

Lehighton didn’t give up, though, getting its quick passing game going a bit, putting together two scoring drives late. Croizier capped off a 10-play, 65-yard drive with a short run and Lucykanish finished off a nine-play, 72-yard drive with a 19-yard strike to Cash White.

RUN STUFFERS ... Northwestern held Croizier to 35 yards on 15 carries and in total allowed just 1.28 yards per carry on the night.

RUNNING HARD ... Sukanick ran hard, grinding out 126 yards on 24 carries with a rushing score. Zimmerman also had a productive night with 108 total yards and a touchdown.
