Pleasant Vy. rips ES North
In the wild, timberwolves might be able to fight bears without a declared winner, but that was not the case Friday night in a football game played in Brodheadsville, where the Pleasant Valley Bears routed the East Stroudsburg Timberwolves by a score of 60-0.
North (0-7) actually had its best offensive series on their first possession, gaining a first down at the Pleasant Valley 49 after a six-yard run by Andrew Eggar. It would be the only time in the game when the visitors crossed midfield.
Following a fourth down punt, PV’s Chris Ward took a direct snap, and on a nifty cutback run he darted 49 yards to the T-Wolve’s nine-yard line. Ward then passed to William Breuer in the flat for a short gain before Ward scored from the four-yard line for the first of his three touchdowns on the night.
The Bears recovered a fumble on the ensuing possession, setting up their offense on the North 18-yard line. Two plays later, Sean Cobb bolted through the right side for a three-yard score and a two touchdown advantage.
On a third-and-12 from its own 23, North fumbled again, recovered by the Bears’ Tyler F. Brown. Quarterback Brandt Wines increased the score to 21-0 on a one-yard keeper with 2:02 left in the first quarter.
Following another North punt, returned 29 yards by Cobb to the T-Wolves 33, Ward would later score again, this time from 18 yards out giving the home team a 27-0 lead.
The Bears hit a big play on their next possession. On a first down from their own 26, Cobb found open space on way to a 74-yard TD run.
Pleasant Valley scored twice more before half time. Ward hit for the trifecta with his four-yard run at the 3:05 mark. With 1:15 to go before intermission, Cobb ran back an interception 43 yards to raise the score to 46-0 at the half.
PV Coach Blaec Saeger said his team fulfilled his expectations for the victory. “We did what we had to do,” he said. “It was good to get a win again, and with a few breaks here and there we might very well be 7-0 right now instead of 3-4.”
Playing under the mercy rule in the second half, Pleasant Valley wasted no time scoring again.
Sophomore Zidan Moore took the kickoff and raced down the left sideline for an 84-yard return. Saeger freely substituted in the second half. Early in the fourth quarter, Chris Ward’s younger brother, Cameron, ended a 43-yard drive with a four-yard touchdown run.
After the game, Chris Ward, who gained 81 of PV’s 174 rushing yards, spoke about getting within 50 yards of reaching 1,000 yards for the season. “What’s more important to me is winning games, but it will be nice to get to 1,000 for sure,” he said.
Saeger, who teaches at East Stroudsburg North, complimented the T-Wolves energy.
“They came to play and put effort into both sides of the ball. They’re very young, but just watching them, you could tell they played with enthusiasm for the whole game.”
Saeger now looks forward to going up against Pocono Mountain East in the battle for the Ol’ Oaken Bucket. “Without a doubt, it’s the most important game on our schedule. They’ve won the Bucket the last two years, so we’ll be out to take it back.”
NO AIR IN THE BALL … PV threw one pass for five yards in the game. North threw four passes with no completions and one interception.
HARD TIMES … With the loss, the Timberwolves have lost 19 games in a row dating back to 2024.
CAREER CHEERS … Chris Ward now has over 2,000 career rushing yards and is fourth all time for the Bears with 31 touchdowns scored.
